Background

Miranda Barbour

In an interview with The Daily Item (Sunbury), Miranda Barbour detailed many items regarding her background. Barbour claims she was molested by a relative at the age of four, and her mother has confirmed that Barbour's uncle was arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a minor and sentenced to 14 years in prison.[3] Barbour also recounted that she joined a satanic cult in at the age of thirteen, and soon after had her first experience with murder when the cult leader forced her to shoot a man in debt to the cult.[4]

Miranda has claimed that she became pregnant during her time in the cult, and that members delivered an "in-house abortion." However, Barbour's mother has also claimed that when taking Miranda to a doctor, no signs of an ended pregnancy were evident.[5] Barbour then allegedly spent another three years in Alaska, in that time marrying one of the primary leaders in the cult, a man named Forest, and becoming pregnant for a second time. Following Forest's murder, Miranda then moved to North Carolina.

Case Details

The couple allegedly met LaFerrara through an ad on Craigslist where she offered to have sex with him in exchange for payment.[6][7] Miranda picked up LaFerrara at a mall on November 11, 2013 in the couple's SUV [8]. Elyette Barbour told police that he hid in the back of the car under a blanket. After she allowed Laferrara into her vehicle, Miranda signaled to Elyette, who jumped out and wrapped a cord around Laferrara's neck as Miranda stabbed him 20 times in their Honda CRV.[9]

Police said after the couple dumped Laferrara's body, they then bought bleach wipes, towels, and cleaning liquid to remove the blood from inside the vehicle and then went to dinner. According to the arrest affidavit, Elyette Barbour said the couple killed Laferrara because they just wanted to murder someone together.[10]

According to police, the Barbours initially denied even knowing LaFerrara, but police traced the last call from LaFerrara’s phone to Miranda’s phone. As the investigation developed, the couple’s stories allegedly changed from Miranda’s story of self-defense to a mutual confession to premeditated murder.[11] The county prosecutor has announced his intent to pursue capital charges.

Miranda has claimed to be responsible for the deaths of "at least 22 people" between 2008 and 2013, but investigators have not confirmed her claim.[12] She claimed the killings were part of her involvement in a Satanic cult.[13]

LaFerrara's body was discovered November 12, 2013 in an alley in Sunbury, a small city located about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
