The Sugababes at last year's MTV Europe awards
Pop trio Sugababes have knocked Oasis off the top of the UK singles chart after just one week.

Freak Like Me - a cover of a 1995 track by US singer Adina Howard and set to the backing of Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric? - has topped the chart in its first week on release.

Top 10 singles
1) Freak Like Me - Sugababes
2) One Step Closer - S Club Juniors
3) Girlfriend - 'N Sync
4) The Hindu Times - Oasis
5) How You Remind Me - Nickleback

It is the first number one for the London-based trio of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and newcomer Heidi Range, who joined Sugababes after Siobhan Donaghy left last year.

The group, formed in 1998, first emerged in 2000 with the single Overload - but lost their record contract a year later, before signing a new deal with Island Records.

S Club Juniors - eight youngsters put together by the former S Club 7 - have the week's second-highest new entry, coming in at two with One Step Closer.

The gap between the two singles was less than 1,000 sales.

All aged between 11 and 14, the group came together after a series of nationwide auditions which attracted over 10,000 hopefuls.

Oasis' former number one, The Hindu Times, slips to number four, one place behind US boy band 'N Sync's track Girlfriend.

The top 10's only other new entry is from Edinburgh rock outfit Idlewild, You Held The World In Your Arms. The band are touring the UK now and the track is taken from their third album, The Remote Part, which is due out in July.

Other new entries are from Kosheen, whose single Hungry is at number 13, and Chemical Brothers, whose Come With Us debuts at number 14.

Novelty track The Wheels On The Bus, by Mad Donna, is another new entry at number 18.

Blue's All Rise replaces Celine Dion's A New Day Has Come at the top of the album charts.
