HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Just like humans, summer heat can be dangerous for pets when the proper precautions aren’t taken.

Mary Unrein, a volunteer at Voice for Animal Companions, said it’s important to not leave your pet in a hot car.

“It is extremely crucial, they can die just like from being overheated just like a baby or something could,” Unrein said.

Making sure your dog has fresh water and isn’t spending too much time outside in peak hours of the heat is crucial.

When it comes to letting your dog go outside for the bathroom, it’s important to keep an eye on them. While doggy doors are convenient, it’s best to keep them closed while you’re away so that your dog isn’t spending too much time outside in the heat.

“They kinda let you know that they’re ready to come back in,” Unrein said. “So, don’t leave them out there unattended for any length of time in this heat.”

While exercise is important, you may need to limit outdoor activity during certain hours of the day as hot concrete can burn the paw pads of animals.

“Just try to avoid being on the concrete, it’s just not safe for the pet. If you can keep them on the grass that’s obviously the preference,” Unrein said.

If you see an animal alone in a hot car, you can contact your local animal control or law enforcement agency.
