SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Meet Weston Mahan. He’s a spirited six-year-old who, despite facing challenges, is just like any other kid—albeit doing things a little differently.

Weston enjoys a variety of hobbies, from riding 4-wheelers to camping with his dad and grandpa. His interest includes anything to do with animals, especially playing with dogs and his horse, Gunner. However, since he was a baby, Weston’s family knew he was special and would face challenges that most six-year-olds wouldn’t.

“He was delayed in his milestones. So we started seeing more doctors, and we’ve had quite the trip with him,” says Casey Matthews, Weston’s mom.

Weston has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, leading to numerous hospital visits, therapy sessions, surgeries, and, of course, medical bills. The financial strain was significant, especially during a month-long stay in the NICU.

“We had a pretty good medical bill. He was in the NICU for a full month,” Matthew says. “So [Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals] stepped in really early and helped us with our medical bills and trying to get therapies started because we were fighting with insurance.”

Right before Weston turned three, he had a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Surgery to help with Spasticity associated with Cerebral Palsy. This surgery helped him with his pain.

Following it, Weston began to talk. A relief for his parents who said before it he only would say a few words.

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals played a crucial role in providing the Mahan family with the financial support and medical guidance they needed as they navigated the unexpected challenges that came with Weston’s condition.

“Children’s Miracle Network has really been a blessing to us,” says Matthews, reflecting on the impact of CMN Hospitals on their journey.

Despite the initial uncertainties, the Mahan family sees Weston not as an average child but as something even better—a thriving six-year-old whose infectious joy has the power to bring smiles even on the worst days.

“Even if you’re having the worst day in the world. If you’re around him, he’ll get you smiling,” Matthews says.

Weston’s story is just one example of how Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals continue to be a lifeline for families, offering assistance, hope, and a pathway to thriving despite the challenges.
