GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Summer is here and so is the West Nile Virus.

Colorado has recorded its first West Nile Virus case of the summer. This case came from a resident of Arapahoe County.

The virus does not usually appear in humans until later into the summer. The hotter temperatures and fewer cooler nights may elevate mosquito activity according to health officials.

Last year Colorado had 51 deaths from West Nile. This was the highest in more than two decades.

There were 631 cases across 40 counties that were recorded in 2023. Almost 400 people were hospitalized.

Health officials suggest wearing insect repellant, long sleeves and pants. They say to stay inside at dawn and dusk when the bugs get most active.
