North Carolina Primary Election 2024: Live real-time election updates
WELL THE VOTES ARE NOW IN FROM SUPER TUESDAY WHERE 16 STATES, INCLUDING NORTH CAROLINA, HELD PRIMARIES FOR CITY, STATE AND FEDERAL RACES. WE HAVE THOSE RESULTS SCROLLING AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SCREEN THROUGHOUT OUR NEWSCAST. ONE RACE, WE ARE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON IS FOR THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY. FOR THE SIXTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT. THE RACE FOR THAT DISTRICT IS STILL TOO CLOSE TO CALL THIS MORNING. AT THIS HOUR, NO CANDIDATE HAS RECEIVED MORE THAN 30% OF THE VOTE THAT IS NEEDED TO SECURE THE WIN. SO WE WANT TO BRING IN MARIA DEBONE NOW. MARIA, WHO ARE THE FRONT RUNNERS AFTER LAST NIGHT AND WHAT DOES THIS MEAN. WELL, THE TWO CANDIDATES, CANDIDATES THAT RECEIVED THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF PERCENTAGE OF THAT VOTE ARE BOTH REPUBLICANS ADDISON MCDOWELL AND MARK WALKER. NOW, MCDOWELL HAS A SLIGHT LEAD OVER WALKER WITH A LITTLE OVER 26% OF THE VOTE. WALKER RECEIVED A LITTLE OVER 20% OF THE VOTE. NEITHER HAS HAD OVER 30% TO SECURE A WIN, SO THEY’LL HEAD NOW TO A RUNOFF. AND LAST NIGHT, BOTH CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED THEIR INTENT TO FIGHT IN A MAY RUNOFF. WAKE FOREST POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR JOHN DINAN SAYS THERE IS A TWO MONTH PERIOD UNTIL A RUNOFF TAKES PLACE, SO THERE’S TIME FOR CANDIDATES TO PUT OUT CAMPAIGN ADVERTISING AND DO MORE CANVASING. ALL TO SECURE THAT SEAT. AND THAT’S SOMETHING BOTH WALKER AND MCDOWELL ARE READY TO DO, AND I HOPE TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT AND TO EARN THE SUPPORT OF EVEN MORE OF THE SIXTH DISTRICT VOTERS AND I HOPE YOU’LL AGREE WITH ME, AND I HOPE YOU’LL AGREE WITH PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP THAT I AM THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THE SIXTH DISTRICT IN NORTH CAROLINA, AND WE’RE CONTINUING TO FIGHT. SO IT’S GOING TO BE INTERESTING. IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF A FLASHBACK TEN YEARS AGO IN OUR FIRST RUNOFF, WHEN WE HAD THE PASTOR VERSUS THE POLITICIAN. THIS TIME IT’S GOING TO BE THE PASTOR VERSUS THE LOBBYIST. AND WE’RE READY FOR THAT TONIGHT. AND THAT WINNER OF THAT RACE WILL HEAD TO WASHINGTON TO TAKE OVER DEMOCRAT KATHY MANNING SEAT. SHE RECENTLY GAVE UP HER SEAT, CITING GERRYMANDERING. THE DISTRICTS AS THE REASON FOR DOING SO. IN GUILFORD COUNTY. MARIA DEBONE WXII 12 NEWS. AND I’M GOING TO TOSS IT BACK NOW TO STAR CONNOR, WHO IS IN THE STUDIO FOR US STAR. OKAY. ALL RIGHT. THE NORTH CAROLINA GUBERNATORIAL RACE IS GEARING UP TO BE ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE AND CLOSELY WATCHED FACE OFFS HERE IN THE TAR HEEL STATE. JOSH STEIN, WHO HAS WON FOR THE DEMOCRATS, AND MARK ROBINSON WON FOR THE REPUBLICANS AFTER LAST NIGHT’S PRIMARY ELECTION, BOTH OF THE MEN FOCUSED ON WINNING OVER THE VOTERS IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION, WHERE WE’RE GOING IS WE’RE GOING TOWARDS THE SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES THAT ALL NORTH CAROLINIANS FACE, THE THINGS THAT WILL MAKE NORTH CAROLINA GREAT, THAT WILL TAKE HER TO OUR NEXT LEVEL OF SUCCESS. WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS? THOSE ARE THOSE IMPORTANT THINGS. EDUCATION AND OUR ECONOMY. THOSE ARE THE THINGS WE’RE GOING TO FOCUS ON. WE MUST BUILD THIS ECONOMY FROM THE BOTTOM UP AND THE MIDDLE OUT, NOT THE TOP DOWN. THAT IS HOW WE GROW THE MIDDLE CLASS IN THE STUDIO. I’M STAR CONNOR FOR WXII 12 NEWS AND THE SINGLE BIGGEST DAY OF PRIMARY CONTESTS HAS THE TWO LEADING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES A LOT CLOSER TO WINNING THEIR PARTY’S NOMINATION. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP RACKED UP SEVERAL HUNDRED DELEGATES ACROSS MORE THAN A DOZEN STATES YESTERDAY FOR SUPER TUESDAY, AMY LU CONTINUES OUR COVERAGE THIS MORNING AT THE WHITE HOUSE. NOW, FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP MAKING SOME HUGE GAINS LAST NIGHT, JUMPING MORE THAN 500 DELEGATES ON THE REPUBLICAN SIDE, HIS RIVAL NIKKI HALEY PICKING UP VERMONT, DENYING TRUMP A FULL SWEEP OF THOSE STATES. HER CAMPAIGN NOTING, QUOTE, A LARGE BLOC OF REPUBLICAN PRIMARY VOTERS ARE EXPRESSING DEEP CONCERNS ABOUT DONALD TRUMP, END QUOTE, SHE ONCE AGAIN IS POSITIONING HERSELF AS THE BEST ALTERNATIVE TO TRUMP, DESPITE FAILING TO MOUNT A COMEBACK IN THE OVERALL DELEGATE COUNT. TRUMP IS LOOKING AHEAD, THOUGH, TO THE GENERAL ELECTION, GIVING A VICTORY SPEECH LAST NIGHT. WE’RE GOING TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT. WE’RE GOING TO CLOSE OUR BORDERS, WE’RE GOING TO DRILL, BABY DRILL. WE’RE GOING TO GET THE INFLATION DOWN AND WE ARE GOING TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. PRESIDENT BIDEN SWEEPING ALL 16 STATES LAST NIGHT EXCEPT FOR THE U.S. TERRITORY OF AMERICAN SAMOA, CLAPPING BACK AT HIS RIVAL, QUOTE, MILLIONS OF VOTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY MADE THEIR VOICES HEARD, SHOWING THAT THEY ARE READY TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST DONALD TRUMP’S EXTREME PLAN TO TAKE US BACKWARDS.
