More than 100 letters and documents by, to and about Franz Xaver Niemetschek and his family. Copious archive aquired from the direct descendants of Mozart's first biographer. While the documents contain no new information on Mozart himself, they do shed new light on Niemetschek's hitherto rather obscure biography and provide a vivid account of the life of the Viennese and Bohemian bourgeoisie during the Biedermeier period. In particular, the present material provides documentation that the musically-minded scholar Niemetschek, a pianist himself, could very well have visited Mozart's concerts in 1787 during his time at the University of Prague, thus once more fuelling the old debate whether the biographer and his subject did in fact meet. The archive comprises material from Niemetschek's lifetime and from that of his two children up to the early 1860s. A detailed catalogue is available upon request.

Folio (264 x 325 mm). Engraved title page, 1 p. of engraved dramatis personae, pp. 3-363 engraved notes. Plate number 1092. Contemporary red half morocco with giltstamped spine and cover title. First edition of the full orchestral score, with the libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. In the "Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung" of 13 September 1815, the publisher Simrock claimed that it was "in accordance with Mozart's own wishes". First shown on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's Freihaus-Theater, the opera today counts among the most popular and most frequently performed ever. - Slight browning; occasional pencil annotations; a contemporary stitch-hole throughout the upper left corner. The highly appealing binding is insignificantly rubbed in places. Provenance: first in the library of the Berlin composer and musical educator Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen (1778-1851), a close friend of Zelter's, with his autograph ownership on the title page: "Von Fr. H-d am 13. 9br 1822 an C. F. Rungenhagen". Later in the collection of the classicist and musical scholar Friedrich Spiro (1863-1940) with his autograph ownership on the reverse of the title page (dated Berlin 1886) and stamps. Latterly in the collection of Pierre Berg (1930-2017) with his bookplate inside the front cover. - KV 620. RISM M 4772. Clment 1172. Riemann 616. Sonneck 119. Towers 680. Hirsch II, 681.

With engraved frontispiece and 1 large folding engraved plate and 6 engraved plates by D. Chodowiecki, and 4 folding tables of music (8 pages) by W.A. Mozart. (10), 633 pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards, lighty rubbed, preserved in a fine morocco and gilt backed folding case. Rmann 1299; Schrder 4549; Music in Geschichte und Gegenwart, 896; Koechel 619; Lanckoronska, Maria und Oehler, Richard, Die Buchillustration des XVIII. First edition of this beautifully illustrated and major work of utopian socialism by the industrialist Franz Heinrich Ziegenhagen (1753-1806), a utopian freemason, who also provided a libretto for a music commission for Mozart bound in at the end (see note below). This is also the first printing of this Mozart cantata ! Franz Heinrich Ziegenhagen was a German merchant and social reformer. He was brought up in the spirit of Pietism but abandoned his protestant faith later in his life and turned into a radical critic of religion. He was succesful as a merchant but never gave up his literary and reforming persuits. He put his entire fortune at the disposal for the spread of his works and ideas and the financial support of the various projects aiming at the practical realization of his ideas. Ziegenhagen died poor and alone in 1806.In Lehre vom richtigen Verhltnis zu den Schpfungswerken und die durch ffentliche Einfrung desselben allein zu bewrkende algemeine Menschenbeglkkung, Ziegenhagen justifies and describes his utopian project: an attempt at establishing an independent, self-sufficient separate colony based on agricultural as well as innovative educational principles. His ideal was to create a "Erziehungs-kommune" (Educational commune) where children would be brought up without distinction based on titles, financial background or status of whatever nature and where education would not just be theoretical but also practical. The institute was intended to be later transferred into a community with collective property and based on the ideas of Rousseau with a balance between man and nature.Ziegenhagen founded an agricultural property in Billwerder, by Hamburg, and appealed in vain to wealthy citizens, the aristocracy and even the French Convention to support similiar institutions. The project failed and after 12 years he sold the Billwerder property and returned to his Elsass homeland in 1802 where he committed suicide four years later. Chodowiecki's marvelous large folding engraved plate depicts the realization of the author's ideals and having him riding on horseback through the gardens and buildings with various related events happening. Daniel Nicolaus Chodowiecki, the eminent German painter and engraver was one of the best and most sought after illustrators of his time and the beautiful and lively engravings of this book by Chodowiecki add further to the book's importance. The folding engraved frontispiece depicts a large lecture room with natural history illustrations on the walls and a very ornate organ on the far wall. The breathtaking view of the author riding through the colony has already been mentioned. The other engravings depict various classrooms with students studying electrical experiments, using various types of other scientific instruments for experiments as well as learning crafts and skills with a view of a blacksmiths shop. The last plate shows a group of students dissecting a pig with a "Kunst-Kammer" in the background.Perhaps most delightful about this book is the first appearance of a "little German cantata" ("Die ihr des unermelichen Weltalls .") which was composed by Mozart in 1791, the same year as his "Magic Flute" which was also greatly influenced by Masonic imagery. The cantata was intended as an inaugural work for the projected community and was scored for voice and keyboard. Ziegenhagen provided the libretto and commissioned Mozart for the music. The work reflects the authors philosophy and speaks of pacifism and universal brotherhood, with an oblique reference to naturism ! All of this reflects the liberal philosophy of the time, with which Mozart would have come into contact as a member of the Viennese Masonic Lodge. The work here was composed for soprano and piano and later composers would add orchestral arrangements as well as string quartets. Ziegenhagen's connection with Mozart has not been satisfactorily established to date. The autograph of K.619 is at the library of the University of Uppsala, Sweden.

Marbled paper wrappers, sewn on three bands.Provenance: (1) 'Albrecht'; label in a 19th-century hand on upper cover.(2) Bernard Quaritch; acquired February 2011.(3) Schyen Collection, MS 5481.The Magic Flute received its premiere at Vienna on 30 September 1791. The first edition of the vocal score was published by Simrock at Bonn in 1793 and the full score in 1814. The formal layout of the title page of our manuscript could indicate that it was copied from a printed edition, but we have not conclusively identified a source: Papageno appears on the title page of a number of editions of Die Zauberflte, including the libretto published by Heinsius at Leipzig in 1794. An early edition of the vocal score was published in two volumes by Breitkopfischen Musikhandlung in the same city in the same year.

Contemporary half linen with some traces of use. KARL BHM S WORKING SCORE: DEEP INSIGHT INTO HIS INTERPRETATION OF DON GIOVANNI Rarity of the first rank: Karl Bhm's Don Giovanni Conducting score and working copy of the famous conductor Karl Bhm, with his annotations and entries throughout. Interesting document on the performance practice of Mozart's opera "Don Juan". Bhm not only made many entries on the interpretation of the opera in his working copy, but also replaced numerous recitative scenes with a different version that he preferred. The edits to the German translation are interesting, most likely resulting from the fact that Bhm performed the opera in Hermann Levi's German version at the Residenztheater on August 22, 1925, as part of the Munich Festival, as can be seen from the program slip pasted on the back of the title page. Bruno Walter had brought Bhm to the opera from Graz to Munich in 1921. For Karl Bhm, Mozart had a very special significance: "my musical patron saint. All the love I have given him for many, many years, he has repaid me a thousandfold. He has always given me the courage not to despair of my profession even in difficult hours ." (Bhm: Autobiography p. 150). - Karl Bhm received the score as a gift from his uncle three days after he had conducted his first opera, the "Trumpeter von Sckingen", on October 20, 1917, at the beginning of his conducting career, as is noted on the title page: "to my dear nephew Karl . Heil Deiner Zukunft". Next to this dedication is the handwritten name "Karl Bhm Graz 1917". Further signatures of Bhm can be found on the endpapers of both volumes. Enclosed is another curiosity from Bhm's social life with a card with gold edge and imprinted text "Menu". Handwritten "In memory of the beautiful Christmas Eve 1956" with signatures of various guests, including Bhm's wife "Thea". The right half of the card contains the menu, typical for this period of the 50s. KARL BHMS ARBEITSPARTITUR: TIEFER EINBLICK IN SEINE INTERPRETATION VON DON GIOVANNI Raritt ersten Ranges!

First edition, an exceptional presentation copy to the proprietor of the famed Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir, inscribed on the half-title " Monsieur Rod[olphe]. Salis, Hommage de l'auteur Ch. Gounod". The book is a study of Mozart's Don Juan that reveals its particular importance to Gounod, and its continuing influence on his life and work: "The score. has had an influence on my whole life akin to a revelation; it was, and has remained for me a kind of embodiment of dramatic and musical faultlessness; I consider it a work without a flaw, of uninterrupted perfection" [the cataloguer's translation]. The connection between Gounod and a famous Parisian cabaretier may seem a surprising one at first, but the composer had a very close relationship with Le Chat Noir, contributing critical work to the establishment's weekly magazine; Ravel, Satie, Massenet, and Faur were also keen supporters of the cabaret. Also significantly, themes from Gounod's Faust were used by Albert Tinchant when he arranged the score for La Tentation de Saint Antoine, a shadow play - "ferie grand spectacle en 2 actes et 40 tableaux" - based on Flaubert's book and designed by painter-designer Henri Rivire, who developed these "ombres chinoises" for which Le Chat Noir became famous. Gounod's "Ronde du veau d'or" accompanies part three of the tableau L'Avarice, entitled "La Bourse", and music from the final scene of Faust is employed for the "Apothose". A superb copy with an association highly evocative of the fertile cross-cultural collaborations of the Banquet Years. Octavo. Unopened in the original cream printed stiff paper wrappers. Wrappers just a little rubbed, very occasional spotting to the text, an excellent copy.

(Kadenzen zu diesen Konzerten komponierten u. a.
