  • Bild des Verkufers fr The Chronicle of Swinging London in the Sixties: A Remarkable Collection of Autographs, Defining an Era (London was then the capital of the world in style, culture, music, fashion, art and design; it virtually made the Sixties) zum Verkauf von The Raab Collection

A unique visitors book kept by a prominent boutique, filled with the iconic names of the era, from Mick Jagger to Queen Elizabeth II to Donovan to Twiggy? With thousands of signatures, the most complete such collection we have seenSwinging London: Its very name conjures up images of style, culture, excitement and romance. Presided over by a young Queen Elizabeth, London transformed itself from a bleak, conservative, colorless city, only just beginning to forget the troubles of the Second World War, into the focus of all the world?s attention, bursting into bloom with color, freedom, optimism and promise. It represented a fundamental and explosive change in attitude, values, and art. And all classes took part, from the Queen?s own sister, Margaret, to a hairdresser?s daughter, Cilla Black. London was the center of all the action; the city where everything was happening and where anything was possible.London captured the imagination of the world?s media, and soon had the full attention of youth everywhere. And when Time Magazine in its April 15, 1966 issue dubbed London: the Swinging City, it cemented the association between London and all things hip and fashionable that had been growing in the popular imagination throughout the decade. London seemed like the capital of the world and all eyes were on it.The importance of London in the making of the Sixties cannot be exaggerated. There, in that one place, at that one time, was the center so many revolutions. There was the fashion revolution, with clothes becoming more playful, colorful, and youthful. This was exemplified by the shops on Carnegie Street and in Chelsea, and the eclectic I Was Lord Kitchener?s Valet on Piccadilly. The sartorial splendor of these fashions was exhibited by models like Twiggy and rock stars like Mick Jagger. There was the art and design revolution, which filled London with galleries and studios. There was the music revolution, exemplified by the Beatles and Rolling Stones. In the U.S., all talk was of the British invasion. It?s hard to overestimate the impact British music had on the lifestyles and aspirations of the youth of America. Looking back, we can almost close our eyes and see Donovan singing Catch the Wind for Bob Dylan or 73 million Americans watching The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. And then of course there was the recreational drug revolution, with these drugs being normative by the end of the Sixties; and the sexual revolution and the shattering of gender roles.Americans flocked to London to participate in it all. You?d find Bob Dylan and Judy Garland there, the Byrds and Beach Boys were there, and so many others. And not everyone was famous. There was the boy at the New Jersey shore looking out over the ocean and thinking London was just on the other side, and he would go there (and did). And Americans weren't the only ones. People from all over the world came to London. Many of London's most fashionable boutiques of the late 1960's and early 70's were on Fulham Road, which runs through Chelsea, and one of these was owned by Neil Zarach. Zarach partnered with the designer David Hicks (who also happened to be Lord Mountbatten's son in law) in this iconic enterprise. In the ?70s Hicks left the business and Zarach took over full ownership.?Zarach's client list?included fashionable London society, as well as many of the world's rulers, mega movie stars, rock stars, tycoons, and others of note in Swinging London. The shop was famous for its?parties, like the "Red Opening" on November 7, 1968.The shop kept a guestbook, which in time became two volumes (one labeled ?Visitors), altogether 225?pages, with over 1,000 signatures. The first volume covers 1967-1971, the second volume?1971-1974, with additional entries for an event on June 7, 1984. The six pages for the ?Red Opening? are memorialized here with the names in red pen. These books are a virtual compendium of the people who made Swinging London. Not only the famous names, though there are plenty of them, but also the others in every walk of life. We have never seen a broader and more diverse collection of signatures that reveals all the facets of Swinging London reach the market, and we obtained this one in England. The Visitors Books: The press was at the boutique in force. Signing the guestbook were journalists representing well over a score of leading newspapers, magazines, and television outlets. These included Vogue, which sent Julian West its senior fashion editor, Harpers Bazaar, The Times, Architecture Magazine, Cosmopolitan, House and Garden Magazine (which sent its editor Olive Sullivan), the BBC, New York Journal of Commence, Art Forum, and Italian Television. As for visitors, we lead off with royalty. The book is presided over by signatures of Queen Elizabeth II; her sister Princess Margaret (signing as Margaret Rose), along with her husband Lord Snowden; their cousin Alexandra; Umberto, the last king of Italy; Ali Mirza, Iranian prince; and Elizabeth Oxenberg, princess of Yugoslavia. This is the only time we have seen something signed by both Elizabeth and Margaret, making this exceptional. Then there is Lord Louis Mountbatten, great-grandson of Queen Victoria. He was named Chief of Combined Operations headquarters in World War II, and the last Viceroy of India. Princess Lee Radziwill, a sister of Jacqueline Kennedy, also signed, as has the Shi?a leader the Aga Khan. From the world of entertainment, actors include such giants as Julie Andrews, Elizabeth Taylor, Luise Rainer, Christopher Plummer, Joan Collins, Angela Lansbury, Leslie Caron, Maggie Smith, Lauren Bacall, and Linden Travers (actress for Alfred Hitchcock). Also Swinging London icons Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, and Julie Christie, among many others. Then were were innumerable people associated with theater and film, like Michael Briggs, location manager for the Godfather; Gerald Vaughan-Hughes, writer of plays and TV series; Jack Hildyard, Oscar winning cinematographer; Mauric.

10 x 8 inch. Minor handling wear to margins and light creasing, light tape residue to the top right corner slightly touching Harrison's inscription, minor tape residue and yellowing to the reverse. Exceptional promotional photograph of the Beatles, signed in blue and red ballpoint inks by John Lennon, Paul McCartney ('Best wishes'), George Harrison and Ringo Starr, additionally inscribed by Ringo ("Geoff, Best wishes from the Beatles") and George ("To Geoff, Best wishes").PROVENANCE: Signatures were obtained by the previous vendor's brother Alec, who in 1964 was asked to work as 2nd Assistant Director on "A Hard Day's Night", a musical comedy directed by Richard Lester and featuring The Beatles. In the vendor's own words "Shooting started in early March '64 at Twickenham Studios. Originally, as no name had been given to the film, all scripts were simply titled, 'The Beatles'. It wasn't until Ringo came in one day and said, "It's been a hard day's night" that Dick Lester decided that 'A Hard Day's Night' should be the title for the film. One of the many jobs of a 2nd' Assistant Director is to make sure the stars of a movie are happy and to make sure they are on the set when required. Consequently, my brother got to know John, Paul, George and Ringo better than some of the other technicians. When not working on films, he was a professional drummer and used to try to teach some jazz drum rudiments to Ringo in the canteen during lunch breaks at Twickenham Studios, but Ringo had his own style and jazz wasn't his thing! It was subsequently Ringo who signed his signature on the photograph first, with my brother's red pen. He also signed: 'To Geoff Best wishes from the Beatles'. Paul McCartney, being the main spokesman for the band, liaised with Alec a lot and would phone our home phone number in the evenings (much to my Mum's annoyance) if there was any problems. I got to speak to him a couple of times. Paul then signed the photo, and then George. John, being much more aloof than the others, was the last one to sign the photo, when they were well into the seven-week shoot, which was finished towards the end of April '64. My brother also helped make a 'short' which was used to promote the main feature movie called 'Follow The Beatles'. It was a manic, frenetic time and the unit needed as much stamina as the Beatles to get all of Dick Lester's ideas to work. So, by the end of the shoot, this eleven year old kid was presented with a full set of The Beatles autographs, much to the envy of our neighbours and my equally Beatles-obsessed school mates".Signatures have been pre-verified by Roger Epperson.

Kl.-8vo. The first four black and white portraits autographed individually in blue ballpoint by John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison; together with a concert programme, The Beatles Show, white covers with orange/black text, Provenance:These autographs were obtained when the Beatles appeared at the Gaumont, Southampton, 13th December 1963. At the time, the vendor's father managed a newsagents in the Commercial Road, a few doors from the cinema. On the day of the concert, the venue's manager, a regular customer, came into the shop and, knowing the vendor to be a Beatles fan, asked her father if she would like to get her autograph book signed by the group. However she had already left for school so her father picked up the Pixerama book which was on sale in the shop. The manager took this to the venue and it came back duly signed.

140 : 90 mm. The Beatles Autographed Promotional Signed Twice By Ringo For A Neighbour Of Ringo's Liverpool (UK). Ringo Starr's first ever Beatles period promotional card that has been autographed on the reverse by The Beatles in blue ballpoint pen. Ringo has added the inscription 'To Mrs. Maguire' at the top of the card he has also added a second signature 'Best Wishes love Richy' Ringo signed in this way as Mrs. Maquire was a family friend who lived just across the road from Ringo's mother at 10 Madryn Street, Liverpool, England, Ringo's mother lived at 9 Madryn Street, Liverpool, England. The signatures date to late 1962 shortly after Ringo had joined the group. Comes with a letter from the previous owner that reads 'Ringo gave and dedicated this card to Mrs Maguire, who lived at 10 Madryn Street directly opposite Ringo's birthplace at 9 Madryn Street, Liverpool 8. Ringo's mother, Mrs Elsie Starkey, and Mrs Annie Maguire were not only neighbours but close friends and Annie's daughter, Marie, was like a big sister to Ringo, child-minding him, taking him to the local parks and cinemas, helping him to read and write (he'd missed much of his schooling due to childhood illnesses) and encouraging his early drumming when he was a long-term patient at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital at Heswall, Wirral. Marie is also the Godmother to one of Ringo and Maureen's children. I acquired the card from Marie at the beginning of the 1980s. She told me that the reason the card was somewhat discoloured and had small holes in it is that for years it was pinned up in the kitchen of their tiny terraced house at 10 Madryn Street which now, along with all the other houses in the street, has been completely renovated. When Ringo became famous as The Beatles drummer, Marie helped him find a new house for his mother and step-father, away from all his fans, in a select part of Liverpool. This card is unique in that it was given to Mrs Maguire personally by Ringo (Richy Starkey) and bears not only the signatures of all four Beatles but additionally has been signed again more personally by Ringo."To Mrs Maguire / Best wishes / love Richy"'. The card has a number of pin holes in places, two small stains and some slight discolouration to the back side. The condition is very good.

Along with a letter of authenticity Signed by Idle, as well as signed custom book. George Harrison was a close friend of the Monty Python star and very supportive of Idle's work on The Rutles, even making a cameo in the television mockumentary *All Your Need is Love*. Later, when EMI Films withdrew funding for *Monty Python's Life of Brian*, Harrison arranged financing for the film through the formation of his HandMade Films company. An exceedingly wonderful association copy of this massive oral history of Beatles history inscribed by one of The Beatles themselves to his good friend and fellow entertainment legend.

SIGNED FIRST EDITION, thus. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenance from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists. Heavy rubbing, especially to corners. Various marks to covers; some light spotting and a few marks to text. Good.

couverture souple.

First published in 1964, Yoko Ono's Grapefruit reads as a set of instructions through which the work of art is completed-either literally or in the imagination of the viewer participant. "Grapefruit is one of the monuments of conceptual art of the early 1960s. [Yoko] has a lyrical, poetic dimension that sets her apart from the other conceptual artists. Her approach to art was only made acceptable when white men like Kosuth and Weiner came in and did virtually the same thing as Yoko, but made them respectable and collectible" (David Bourdon). Ono would enact many of the book's scenarios as performance pieces throughout her career, which formed the basis for her art exhibitions, including the highly publicized retrospective exhibition, This Is Not Here in 1971 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, that was nearly closed when it was besieged by excited Beatles fans, who broke several of the art pieces.

Ephemera. Autographed ephemera obtained in person by a British teenager circa 1964 at various concerts and personal appearances. This collection contains many now obscure groups that, at the time, were important influences on the Liverpool, London, and British music scene in general. Over eighty signatures, many full signatures, some first name only. Some highlights include: Chuck Berry, The Hollies, The Kinks, Memphis Slim, Keith Richards, Ian Stewart and Carl Wilson. In addition, the following pioneering women of 1960s rock & roll are represented in this massive collection: Honey Lantree, Lulu, Julie Grant, Kiki Dee, Millie Small, Tammy St. John, and American blues singer Mae Mercer. An archive which includes the following: Signed Loose Album Leaves (generally 4 x 6"): Applejacks. Signed by four Applejacks. A minor British Invasion group. The reverse is signed by several members of Tommy Quickly and the Remo 4. The Barron Knights with Duke D'Mond. Pop parodists. (Signed by Barron Anthony, Duke D'Mond, Butch Baker, David Ballinger, and "P'nut Salted"). Signed on the reverse by Michael Haslam. Haslam had the same manager as The Beatles, Brian Epstein. He toured with the Beatles in 1964, at the height of Beatlemania. Eventually, Epstein let Haslam go, extinguishing his moment in the spotlight. Beat Merchants. Signatures of 4 group members. On the verso is Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, with 3 signatures. Cliff Bennett & Rebel Rousers. Signatures of 7 group members on 2 leaves. Bennett and Rebel Rousers was an Epstein group. 3 of the group, Zephyrs, have signed on the verso of one sheet. Russ Conway. English popular music pianist and composer. Inscribed "To My Good Friend John, Sincerely, John Ferris." Honey Lantree. A woman, and the drummer of the Honeycombs. This was rare for a 1960s beat group, and Honey strongly disliked being dismissed as a "gimmick" (according to her obituary in The Guardian). The Honeycombs had the number 1 hit "Have I the Right" in 1964. Lulu. One of the most well known Scottish singers. She rose to prominence with her cover of 'Shout' in 1964. H. J. Hinten, Manager of Nick Troy, has signed the reverse. Kenny Lynch. One of the few people of Caribbean origin popular in the British world of pop. Cliff Bennett has signed the reverse. Kiki Dee (Pauline Matthews). She was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown's Tamla Records. In addition, she is known for her 1976 duet with Elton John, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which was Elton John's first UK number one single. She is also an actress. She had a role in "The Lion King" (1994). On the reverse, is the signature of American songwriter Glen Campbell. Cathy McGowan & Michael Aldred. McGowan is a British broadcaster and journalist, most known as presenter of the 1960s pop music television show "Ready Steady Go!" Aldred was a co-presenter on the same show. Signatures of both in full. 6 members of Ken Colyer's Jazzmen have signed the reverse. Tony Marsh /Tony Hall. British DJs. Signatures of both on opposite sides of the leaf. Tony Hall Enterprises later went on to promote acts such as Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath. Art School / Brit Garage / Freak Beat musicians Meddy-Evils from Southampton (signed by Roy Roberts, John Roberts, Tony Benson, Roger [Salomons] and Martin "Cuddles" Smith, the drummer). Memphis Slim. In the early 1960s, Memphis Slim was one of the first artists to sign on when German promoters, along with Willie Dixon, proposed the European blues concert that would eventually become known as the American Folk Blues Festival. This festival was highly influential to the young musicians who would soon after make up the British Invasion. Dave Berry has signed the reverse. Mae Mercer & Keith Smith Band. Signed by Mercer and the group. Keith Smith included on separate sheet. Mae Mercer was an American blues singer and actress who spent much of the 1960s performing at the Blues Bar in Paris. She also performed and recorded in the UK. By 1965, Mae Mercer was such a prominent figure in Europe that she was profiled in "Ebony" magazine. On verso is signature of Adrienne Posta. Matt Monro. Band leader, often compared to Frank Sinatra. He was chosen to sing Britain's entry in the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest. He came in second, which heightened his career. The Monsters with Rory Blackwell. 4 members (Rory Blackwell included) have signed in full. Rory Blackwell was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest drummer in the world. • Bild des Verkufers fr Autograph Letter Signed to Alfred Eisenstaedt, Woodside, CA, June 1965 zum Verkauf von James Cummins Bookseller, ABAA

Zustand: Fine. Pen and ink on paper. 7-1/4 x 6-1/4 inches. Affectionate Letter from Shirley Temple Black to Alfred Eisenstaedt. By the time she was six she had made 20 films. FDR stated, "As long as our country has Shirley Temple we will be all right". At age seven, her films had saved 20th-Century Fox from bankruptcy, and she had become one of the most famous figures in the world. She retired as a child actress in 1940 after making 'The Blue Bird', her 44th film. She was 12 years old. Escaping the usual dismal adulthood of child stars, she married Charles Black and embarked on a career of public service; among her presidential appointments were US Representative to the UN, Ambassador to Ghana, first White House Chief of Protocol, foreign affairs officer for the State Department, and Ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Her best-selling autobiography was published in 1988. She writes affectionately to Alfred Eisenstaedt, who had photographed her as a child, "It was indeed an honor to have you photograph me and my daughter, Sue--not to mention my thirteen year old son, and "Beatle", eleven year old girl! (My husband has escaped you pretty well, so far)." "You and I have grown up together over the years, and you have not changed a bit." Pen and ink on paper. 7-1/4 x 6-1/4 inches.

  • The interview retitled 'Duke looks back and forward | in an interview with Les Tompkins' features on pp.6-7 of the April 1964 number of 'Crescendo'. (Sammy Davis Jr features on the cover, with the announcement 'NOT A WORD ABOUT THE BEATLES!') Three items, the typescript of the interview and two accompanying pieces (one not used). All three in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Carbon typescript, titled 'That's where the tailoring comes in | Duke Ellington talks to Les Tomkins'. 6pp, 4to. On six leaves, stapled together at a corner. Of particular interest in this typescript is the following passage suppressed in the published version in which Ellington names Jimmy Forrest as one of his imitators: 'we've had people like Jimmy Forrest who took a couple of pages out of our book, wrote a number and called it something else. It became the biggest thing since "St. Louis Blues". And that's "Night Train" - you know, from "Happy Go Lucky Local"'. In a couple of instances the typescript appears closer to Ellington's voice than the published version. It features the Americanism 'specialty', rather than the published 'speciality'; and has the following passage which was recast for publication: '[] and as the refreshments would take over and he would roll of the piano stool why, they would call in the soda jerker [i.e. Ellington] to come and play the piano.' The published version reads: 'As the refreshments took over and he rolled off the piano stool, they'd call in the soda jerker to play the piano.' Other changes are relatively minor: 'Some people don't like to have to what is it? [] to follow something they are not familiar with' printed as 'Some people don't like to have to apply themselves. [] to follow something unfamiliar'; 'Then you don't have to worry about how many drinks you take' printed as 'Then they don't have to worry about how many drinks they take'; 'the English audience has' printed as 'the British audiences have'; 'is a thing which is rare' printed as 'is rare'. In the typescript the preamble to the article ends rather lamely, 'However, here are some of his interesting utterances about:', this is replaced in the printed version with 'But the printed words alone have their own value. L.T.' In addition the published version exhibits a few minor editorial changes, such as the correction of 'fit' to 'fitted' and 'less notes' to 'fewer notes'. The typescript has the following headings: 'His jazz beginnings', 'When he was a fixer', 'The men in the band', 'Billy Strayhorn', 'Their writing approach', 'Ellington imitators', 'His view of the present band' and 'His view of the future'. These are replaced in the published version by 'Smart', 'So loud!', 'Cutting', 'Renaissance' and 'Protection'. TWO: Carbon typescript headed: 'The Duke presents a bouquet to our audiences'. 1p, 4to. Published in a box at bottom left of first page of interview under the title 'An Ellington bouquet'. THREE: Carbon typescript of one-sentence quotation from Ellington, under title 'Duke Ellington's comments on Crescendo'. 1p, 4to. Reads: 'I think it's wonderful reading. And it's very exciting, thrilling interesting, mainly and enjoyable.' This endorsement does not appear to have been used by the magazine. The material comes from an archive of typescripts by Tomkins of his Crescendo contributions, including interviews with Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins, Bud Freeman, Stan Tracey, Erroll Garner, Stan Kenton, Quincy Jones, Joe Turner, Tubby Hayes, Stan Getz.
