8vo. p. To a Mr. Le Cos, inviting him to pick up a letter by the royal forest administrator Constantin-Marie-Louis-Lon, marquis de Bouthillier-Chavigny: "Le M.is [marquis] de Brz invite monsieur Le Cos vouloir bien passer chez lui soit aujourd'hui sur les 5 heures, soit demain sur les 2 heures aprs midi, ayant lui communiquer une lettre qu'il a reu de M. le M.is de Bouthillier". - Henri-Evrard de Dreux-Brz is most famous for his failure to enforce the royal order to dissolve the National Assembly on 23 June 1789 due to the resistance of the representatives of the Third Estate. According to legend, Mirabeau directly confronted Dreux-Brz, telling him to inform the king that they will only leave by force. Dreux-Brz continued to serve the royal household during their arrest in the Tuileries palace and emigrated to Switzerland in 1793. During the Restauration, he was reinstated in his court functions. - Traces of folds. With a minimal stain.

4to. 5 pp. (4 of which mounted on paper). The signatories were Jules Favre, foreign minister in the provisional Government of National Defence, for the French, and Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the newly established German Empire, for Prussia and her allies. The suspension of hostilities initially lasted until 19 February, when it was extended through 26 February, when a preliminary peace treaty was signed, also at Versailles. The definitive Treaty of Frankfurt was signed on 10 May. Although technically an armistice, the military position of France at the time and the terms were such that it was de facto a conditional surrender by the vanquished to the victors. - With some notes and corrections; traces of a seal, some browning.

8vo. 1 pp. In German. "Ich hoffe da Sie den Photographen auf Morgen nach Frhstck bestellen? Ich mchte da er auch P[ri]n[ce]ss Beatrice mit ihrem Spanischen Hut machte. Wollen Sie Bending [?]) sagen da er das Mausoleum von verschiedenen Seiten aufnimmt und da er auch am 17 frh Morgens in Frogmore ist - um noch meinen Befehl ber das Innere wegen Maus[oleu]m zu erhalten?" Please tell Bending [?] to take the mausoleum from several sides and that he is also to be at Frogmore early in the morning of the 17th - to hear my orders regarding the interior of the Mausoleum"). - At the time of writing, the building later known as the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore was being constructed for the Queen Mother, who had passed away in May 1861. From December onwards, following the death of Prince Albert, it was expanded to serve as the final resting place of the Queen and the late Prince Consort. - On mourning paper with printed letterhead of Osborne House; slight traces of handling.

Oblong 12mo. 1 p. A catchphrase of radical Lutheranism, apparently quoted ironically by the Cardinal to expose the extremism of his opponents: "Incipit hareticus fieri, qui scripta Lutheri / Carpit, et infernum, ni resipiscat, adit" ("He who attacks Luther oversteps the threshold of heresy, and, unless he repents, goes to hell"). The Strasbourg Protestant theologian and Hebrew scholar Tobias Speccer (1563-1622) quoted the lines (in a slightly more extensive version, with variation) in his essay, "De vera Iesu Christi Ecclesia & Pontificia Romana opposita", published in 1617 in an academic volume celebrating the centenary of the Ninety-Five Theses, the primary catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. In this context, they give evidence of the extreme reverence Luther enjoyed among his disciples more than seven decades after his death. - Cardinal Commendone had performed various papal missions to the courts of Protestant rulers. The numerous letters which he wrote during his 1560/61 mission to Germany to invite the Catholic and Protestant Estates to the re-opened Council of Trent present a picture of the ecclesiastical conditions in the country during those times. - Some worming. 18th-century authentification note ("Autographum Cardinalis Commendone") in red ink at the foot of the clipped page.
