🇺🇳 This year's #COPUOS2024 session marked a step change in the engagement with the space sector on issues of space governance, recognising the value of expert-driven discussions on active debris removal, space sustainability, space traffic coordination, and more. 🤝 🆕️👥 COPUOS agreed to formally admit Space Data Association, the GSOA (the Global Satellite Operators Association), Space Renaissance International, Outer Space Institute and the African Astronomical Society as observers. UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini said: “The participation of stakeholders from across the space sector informs international negotiations on the scientific, technological and legal aspects of space governance. Space has for some years now, no longer been solely State-driven. Innovative and scalable solutions developed by the private sector along with a wealth of knowledge and operational experience exist and must be leveraged in the service of maintaining and increasing sustainable access to space data, technology and services. #UNOOSA will continue to engage the private sector through initiatives such as the UN Space Bridge, the World Space Forum, and COPUOS to ensure governance and actions are driven & informed by the latest knowledge and information available.” 🌐 👉 For the full list of 50+ observers (International Organisations, International Non-governmental Organisations, industry, etc), check out: https://lnkd.in/gf_SCg8K

Happy International Asteroid Day. ☄️ Did you know Asteroid Apophis is due to fly past the Earth on Friday 13th (😱) April 2029, and that last week's Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space started discussions on making 2029 the 🇺🇳-designated year of 'Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defense'. 🎥 See our video from February below for information on how the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG) study and track asteroids, as well as prevent possible impacts. #AsteroidDay United Nations #AsteroidApophis #COPUOS2024 NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Detlef Koschny
☄️How often do asteroids hit Earth? 🌍 What’s the risk? 🚗🦖 And can we create a “cosmic car accident” to stop them from wiping us all out like the dinosaurs? 👨🔬👩🔬 🇺🇳 Watch the interview below with Kelly Fast of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, who is the Coordinating Officer for the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), and Detlef Koschny, Professor at the Technical University of Munich, and Chair of Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, to find out more on why international cooperation on planetary defence and protection is critical. 👀 see the following links for information on the functions of, and #UNOOSA’s Secretariat roles to, SMPAG and IAWN: SMPAG - https://lnkd.in/dScCWdiW IAWN - https://lnkd.in/dVf4JUAM #COPUOS2024 #IAWN #SMPAG #space #asteroid 🎥 Video edited by UN Information Service and produced by Andrew Peebles & Laura Skocek.
