SurfAid's mission is to improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of families living in remote regions.

About us

SurfAid’s mission is to improve the lives of women and children in remote areas connected to us through surfing. SurfAid specialises in working in very isolated villages where the maternal and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world. Our geographical focus on the heartlands of surfing where few visitors but surfers go, make our work unique. We know that simple solutions like hand washing prior to delivering a baby, practising exclusive breastfeeding, and improving nutrition can have an enormously positive impact on the health of women and their families. We work with each individual community to affect long term behaviour change. We believe, and our results show, that working with communities to develop their own solutions is the most effective form of aid - a hand up, not a hand out approach.

We are proud to partner with Western Solomon Surfing Association (WSSA) to bring Women Make Waves to Solomon Islands. Women Make Waves leverages surfing to advance gender equality, end gender-based violence (GBV), and empower women. The programs are designed to be safe spaces, promote positive relationships between men and women, showcase women's abilities, and help them take their place in society. We thank the Australian Government for their support through the Team Up program, and our program partners WSSA, Australian Volunteers Program, Family Support Centre, and Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association. Alpina, from the Mentawai Islands, used to walk over 1.5km for water, complicating daily tasks like cooking and bathing her children. SurfAid installed clean water systems, including rainwater tanks, in 48 homes, improving life for families including Alpina’s. She expressed her relief: “Having clean water right next to our house has significantly changed our lives. I no longer have to walk far with my children.” 💧 You heard it from Alpina: Better outcomes for families can be achieved when basic services like clean water are available. We’re excited to extend the gift of clean water to thousands more people through our two new projects in Indonesia. Donate today to help make a lasting impact. https://lnkd.in/gUsNM48r

SurfAid is committed to fostering real change for the communities we serve. To ensure our efforts have a positive impact, we employ various monitoring methods, including discussions with beneficiaries, data collection, and formal meetings. In May, we hosted a joint monitoring and advisory meeting for our Nustani program in West Sumba, together with the representatives from the Indonesian National and District Governments, New Zealand Government, as well as SurfAid and our beneficiaries This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the program's outcomes and collaboratively plan for the future. By working together, we share responsibility and support sustainability. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible partner, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade for their decades of support for SurfAid and the communities we serve.

SurfAid’s Nusatani (‘Farming Islands’) program has been tackling poverty, stunting and malnutrition at a household level through nutrition-sensitive agriculture for over five years. Earlier this month, we visited these communities with our Indonesian and New Zealand government partners to witness the positive changes firsthand. A hand up for these communities is made possible thanks to the ongoing support of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing support and commitment to remote surf communities.

Transform Lives with Clean Water 💧 As surf tourism grows, many surfers seek untouched waves in Indonesia, but local communities face staggering challenges. On Siberut Island in the Mentawai, only 1 in 5 people have access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. We’re launching the Clean Water Fund to support two pioneering WASH programs in Indonesia's surf havens. These initiatives will bring sustainable water access and improved hygiene to families in Mentawai and Rote Islands. Program Highlights: 🌊 Mentawai Katuronanta Program: Targeting 1,000+ people across five villages with sustainable water sources and climate resilience education. 🌴 Rote Malole Program: Builds on our existing work in Rote to enhance water infrastructure, promoting efficient water use, and advancing hygiene practices in 12 communities. Your gift can transform lives. Donate to the Clean Water Fund today and help provide essential water, sanitation, and hygiene to those in need. Donate at https://lnkd.in/gUsNM48r
