In 2022, Nebulae, the networking space at Doclisboa, welcomed France as the Invited Country. With the support of Unifrance, the Festival presented a programme of meetings, networking activities and a pitching session for projects in development. This year, the edition comprised a selection of five projects from France and three representing the invited countries from the previous Nebulae editions—Germany, Georgia and Croatia.

The Pitch the Doc Award, for one of the selected projects of the Invited Country, was given to Under the Volcano (France/Italy) by Sara Rastegar and Simone Pozzi, produced by Jasmina Sijercic (Bocalupo Film), Giovanni Donfrancesco (Altara Films). The award is accompanied by an expert consultancy worth €500€ and valid for 6 months.

The project logline reads: Off the coast of Sicily, the summit of Stromboli rises from the sea. Its regular explosions have lit up the night ever since ancient times. What are people looking for when they came to settle in this place where everything could be destroyed at any moment?

“Lettre à Eric Pauwels” ou a Florista e o Cônsul (Portugal/France) by Clara Jost, produced by Anze Persin (Stenar Projects) and Carole Chassaing (Tamara Films), won the DAFilms Award. The €5000 in-kind prize is awarded to a debut or second film. The winning film is released on DAFilms (including Americas, Europe, Asia) for two years, with a host of associated promotional features.

The project logline reads: A story told in first person that tries to make sense of a set of coincidences. The Carnation Revolution, Belgian director Eric Pauwels, a young Peruvian director, a Flemish florist and the Portuguese consul in Ghent are all strangely linked.

The DAE Talent Encouragement Award went to Beyond Landscape (France) by Etienne de France, produced by Aymeric Isnard (Futur Antérieur). The prize comprises free memberships for one year for the director(s) and producer(s) and a tailor-made consultancy session with DAE senior consultants.

The project logline reads: This film revisits the studies of ethno-psychiatrist Georges Devereux amongst the Mohave, a native American tribe. In dialogue with Mohave archaeologists and researchers, it questions the reception of Devereux’s studies in today’s Mohave context.
