Sunny Side 2023

Sunny Side of the Doc (#SSD23), the La Rochelle-based International marketplace for documentary, unveiled May 11 the official selection for its 34th edition to be held 19-22 June 2023.

This year, 42 projects from 23 countries will compete for the best pitch across seven thematic pitching sessions all supported by key industry partners. Project holders will present their works before a panel of key industry decision-makers consisting of leading broadcasters, funders, platforms and foundations.

The best pitches in each category will be chosen by an international jury and will receive a prize from the official sponsors.

The seven categories are Global IssuesNature & ConservationScienceHistoryArts & CultureImpact Campaigns and New Voices. Click here to see all the selections (6 projects er category).

Each year, Sunny Side attracts more than 2,000 participants from over 60 countries, including content creators (producers and directors), decision-makers (broadcasters, streamers, foundations, museums, social networks, sales agents) and professionals from industries related to content creation (archives, music etc.) to sell or buy projects and programmes, and to find the right business partners.

“We promote a culture of co-creation and international cooperation between industry stakeholders. We create unique opportunities in a feel-good atmosphere through a variety of high-level pitching sessions, panel discussions, hands-on workshops and networking activities, all with the added value of an exhibition space,” write organisers.

In February 2023 the Kenyan project Fight For Food, produced by Jim Chuchu and Benjamin Muasya for Rada Studios Ltd (Kenya) and directed by Maia von Lekow, Christopher King and Zippy Kimundu, won the Sunny Side of the Doc #GlobalPitch23! Award, which came with a cash prize of €3,000 plus two full passes for Sunny Side of the Doc 2023. The Global Pitch(es) took place online 7 and 8 February.

The logline of Fight For Food reads: “A closer look at the farmers, scientists and cultural activists fighting to preserve Kenya’s agriculture and food cultures – and the forces working to take control of the country’s food systems.”
