In the town of Zambrana, just outside Cotuí, Dominican Republic, two brothers thank Barrick for their entrepreneurial success. Juan José and Alexis Torres were born and raised in Zambrana, a town bordering our Barrick Pueblo Viejo mine. They saw the mine’s need for contractors and seized the opportunity to provide them. By taking matters into their own hands, they knew they could ensure that economic benefits from mining projects were felt within their community. The brothers were no strangers to hard work, having owned businesses in the past in various hands-on fields. But by 2019, they were struggling to build capacity within their businesses. Now with the help of Barrick’s small business programs, Construc Zambrana has reached the next level. ✨Tip Top Training Construc Zambrana started by providing sediment controls to the mine, quickly expanding their services to assist with drilling, vegetation control and topographic works. As this work continued, the company was offered opportunities to grow their capabilities. Through our training programs, Construc Zambrana completed training in administration, safety, finances and human resources. These programs are designed to uplift local businesses while aligning them to Barrick’s overall sustainability strategy. The Torres brothers claim that safety training was one of the most impactful investments. When looking back on their safety management procedures prior to this training, they can easily identify near misses that would have been devastating to the safety of their workers. But now, they’re experts themselves. Currently, they’re working with a local energy company to provide their very own safety training services. With their newly developed skills in administration and financial planning, Construc Zambrana has finally created role separation and specialization. With roles dedicated to sourcing, accounting, and other administrative needs, they have the capacity to apply for other opportunities and receive contracts outside of Barrick. Through these programs, Construc Zambrana has far surpassed the profitability of their past businesses. While their last company employed 20 workers, Construc Zambrana now employs close to 270 workers. ✨Upskilling the Community The Torres brothers are grateful for the success of their business, but even more so for the impact it has on their community. Almost all their employees are from Zambrana. Through Barrick community coordinators, contractors in need of work are recorded and referred to Construc Zambrana. Of these recruits, the Torres brothers provide upskilling opportunities to candidates for continued career growth. They say that the increased availability of employment is truly felt by the locals. Not so long ago, Alexis Torres remembers locals protesting poor employment opportunities by burning their tyres on local roads. Now, Construc Zambrana works with the locals to provide job opportunities.

She recently added another vehicle to her skill-set: a motor grader that maintains the roadways haul trucks travel on. Our people are our greatest asset and Barrick continuously invests in our team through world-class training and development programs. The programs are tailored to local needs, covering technical, behavioral and informal learning, to help our people feel engaged, valued and empowered.

Africa’s largest gold mine, Kibali, continues to deliver growth as its strong record of replenishing reserves and resources, and further investment in technology and capacity, position it to sustain its 750,000 ounces annual production past the current 10-year horizon to 15 years and beyond. Speaking to media and other stakeholders today, Barrick president and chief executive Mark Bristow said Kibali was not only Africa’s largest gold mine but also its most automated and, thanks to its three hydropower stations, a leader in renewable energy. When its back-up solar power plant and battery storage system are commissioned next year, the renewable component of its energy mix will increase to 85%. “When we started building Kibali 14 years ago, this was one of the DRC’s most underdeveloped regions. The value we created and the infrastructure we built here have since transformed it into a new economic frontier and a flourishing commercial hub, with a community that has grown from 30,000 to over 500,000 people. We’ve promoted this growth through investment in community development and partnering with local businesses we have mentored. Our Azambi power station, for example, was built by an all-Congolese team. Since 2010, Kibali’s payments to local contractors and suppliers have amounted to almost $2.7 billion (CDF 7.6 trillion),” Bristow said.

For many generations, Indigenous people and communities in Canada have celebrated their rich culture and heritage on June 21st, the summer solstice. On #NIPD2024 Barrick would also like to recognize and honour the important history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across the country. To further build respect and understanding, all Barrick employees and contractors in Canada will participate in an Indigenous Relations Learning program to help broaden our understanding of the country’s colonial history and its impact on Indigenous people and communities today. This learning program is part of our efforts to continue to be better partners to Indigenous communities both as a company and as individuals living on this beautiful, shared territory.
