About us

Founded in 1670, HBC is North America’s longest continually operating company and is headquartered in New York and Toronto. HBC is a holding company of investments and businesses that operates at the intersection of technology, retail operations and real estate. It wholly owns Saks Fifth Avenue, the entity that operates Saks Fifth Avenue’s physical locations, O5, the operating company for Saks OFF 5TH stores, and Hudson’s Bay, Canada’s preeminent multi-category retailer. In addition to owning world-renowned brick and mortar operators that carry high-end brands and styles, HBC is the majority owner of iconic ecommerce companies: Saks, a leading online destination for luxury fashion, and Saks OFF 5TH, a premier luxury off-price ecommerce company offering top brands at the best prices. Both businesses were established as separate operating companies in 2021. The company has also expanded its holdings to include a majority stake in Convene, a hospitality company that designs and manages premium meeting, event, and flexible office spaces. With assets spanning top markets and prime locations across North America, HBC owns or controls—either entirely or with joint venture partners—approximately 42 million square feet of gross leasable area. HBC Properties and Investments, the company’s dedicated real estate and investment portfolio business, manages these assets. Streetworks Development, its property development division, leads the planning and execution of projects that modernize HBC-owned properties to unlock value-enhancing opportunities across the portfolio.

Happy Canada Day from Hudson's Bay Company! As the oldest continuously operating company in North America, Hudson's Bay Company has been part of the fabric of this great nation for over 350 years, growing and evolving alongside it. We're happy to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, which occurred in 1867. Today, we celebrate the rich history, diverse culture, and remarkable achievements of Canada, a place where inclusivity, innovation, and kindness are at the heart of everything we do. As we look back on our journey, we're grateful for the support of our customers and communities and are excited about the bright future ahead. Our Canadian offices will be closed to ensure our associates enjoy the great outdoors and reflect on what it means to be Canadian. #CanadaDay #HudsonsBayCompany

Juneteenth commemorates a pivotal moment in American history—the end of slavery in the United States. June 19 was chosen for this annual observance to mark the anniversary of the day in 1865 when African Americans in Galveston, Texas, first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two years earlier on January 1, 1863. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated to both acknowledge the end of slavery and honor Black culture, resilience, and achievement. It is a day for reflection and joy, observed with family gatherings, cookouts, keynote speeches, educational programs, marches, and religious services. At Hudson’s Bay Company, our offices will be closed to encourage our associates to observe the holiday as we remember the importance of this day in history and continue to strive for equality, justice, and unity for all. #Juneteenth #CelebrateDiversity

LGBTQ+ Pride Month, celebrated annually in June, honors the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. During that time, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn resisted police harassment and persecution, sparking a movement to eliminate discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ+ Americans. Today, Pride Month features parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, and concerts. At HBC, we are dedicated to creating a safe space for our 2SLGBTQIA+ colleagues. We strive to understand the challenges they face, recognize the ongoing risks to their rights, and contribute to fostering an inclusive environment #HappyPrideMonth

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and while promoting mental health is important all year long, this special month of recognition raises awareness about mental illness, its prevalence in today's society, and its impact on people of all ages and backgrounds. Mental health and wellness does not respect days, months, or years. Our mental well-being is an ongoing and ever-evolving state that requires the utmost care, respect, and attention. That is what makes this year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Month, “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World,” so appropriate. Our world is constantly changing, but commitment to mental well-being stays the same. This prioritization is an important focus for us across HBC’s entire portfolio. Of particular note is our iconic retail brand, Saks Fifth Avenue, which is leaning into our commitment to mental health and wellness. Through Saks Fifth Avenue partnership with celebrated behavioral scientist and founder of Things Are Looking Up®️, Dr. Deepika Chopra, as well as fundraising, employee events, and a local grant program to support nonprofit organizations working to provide direct access to mental health care in their communities, Saks is showcasing how Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to lend one another a hand. Green is the color of Mental Health Awareness Month, so be sure to wear green in May to help spread awareness. Life is full of ups and downs. By recognizing this shared experience, we start to feel how #CompassionConnects. Get involved during #MentalHealthWeek. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate achievements, acknowledge much-needed progress, and promote hidden contributions – a chance to celebrate Black achievement by both acknowledging the struggles and honoring the triumphs. One such contribution, largely unknown to all but architectural historians, comes from the timeless elegance and brilliance of Paul R. Williams. We at HBC are honored that Williams’ story as a groundbreaking African-American architect intersects with our portfolio’s story. In the 1930s, his talent was integral to the design of the original Saks Fifth Avenue at 9600 Wilshire in Beverly Hills, manifesting our brand through what has become a cultural and aesthetic icon. The original Saks Fifth Avenue building in Beverly Hills, the work of Williams’ keen design sensibility, is proposed for restoration and landmark designation as part of the 9600 Wilshire community’s future development, ensuring that his contributions remain part of 9600 Wilshire for years to come. Williams’ unique style, however, has taken new shape at Saks Fifth Avenue's reimagined women's store in Beverly Hills which we reopened this past week. Our redesign is inspired by Williams’ signature style and pays homage to his lasting legacy. We encourage all to use Black History Month as an opportunity to learn more about Paul R. Williams and others whose contributions to our shared history are countless, transformative, and often overlooked. Today, common to most days, is a day of action – a day to make progress, foster understanding, and better our communities. Yet what sets today apart is that we do it in service of Martin Luther King Jr. and his lasting legacy. Dr. King’s soaring rhetoric, optimistic visions, and tireless commitment to justice fostered progress for the United States and marked a giant leap forward for equality around the world. His inspiring words and actions serve as a still-living reminder of the power inherent in compassion, conviction, and courage. Our team members know that today is a day to respond to one of Dr. King’s most persistent questions: “What are you doing for others?” Through a combination of reflection, volunteerism, and action, we come closer to answering his inquiry. From all of us at HBC, we wish you a reflective and meaningful MLK Day. #MLKDay #Equality #Inclusion #Inspiration

“An act of true reconciliation — economic reconciliation” said Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO)' Grand Chief Jerry Daniels when describing SCO’s partnership with Truth North to revitalize downtown Winnipeg and transform the former HBC location.  SCO’s partnership with True North is only the latest example of how the reconciliation process continues to evolve and serve the needs of our shared Winnipeg community. Our warmest congratulations go to Grand Chief Jerry Daniels, SCO, True North, and all the stakeholders that helped make this happen. HBC is looking forward to seeing Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn become a new Winnipeg landmark. To read the article, click the link here: https://lnkd.in/eSUrU3RP
