We were delighted to welcome Nnenna as a keynote speaker at #AidEx Nairobi last week. View a few of her reflections below.
On Thursday, June 13th, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote address at the #AidExNairobi2024 conference on “Revitalising Humanitarian and Development Assistance”. My focus was on the critical role of multilateral banks in addressing humanitarian needs and fostering regional resilience for the most vulnerable communities. The discussions at AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Event #AidExNairobi2024 are timely as we face a confluence of crises. Climate change is devastating villages, farmlands, and infrastructure, while political conflicts are displacing people, and threatening regional peace and security. Despite these challenges, humanitarian and refugee responses suffer from unprecedented funding shortages. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), like the African Development Bank Group, have a core mission of promoting socio-economic stability. Their approach to humanitarian aid is not just about immediate relief but also about sustainable solutions. For example, the Bank Group’s 2022-2026 Strategy for Addressing Fragility and Building Resilience focuses on crisis prevention and private sector development. Across the East African region, some of the projects funded by the Bank in partnership with UN agencies like the UNHCR, UNESCO WFP, FAO and other agencies like SOS, and IOM have immensely contributed directly to building peace by tackling vulnerability, direct violence and resource conflicts. The total amount of projects currently under implementation in collaboration with these agencies stands at USD 287 million in the Banks East Africa region alone. Together, we are working towards a more stable and resilient future for all. #HumanitarianAid #Development #MultilateralBanks #ClimateChange #PeaceBuilding #Resilience #EastAfrica

Some interesting insights from our Keynote speaker at AidEx Nairobi last week ⬇️ #AidEx #Nairobi #humanitarianaid
What does it mean to be a humanitarian in the age of the climate crisis? It was inspiring to learn from experts and professionals at last week’s AidEx in Nairobi. They are confronted daily to the urgency of climate change that’s already affecting the region’s most vulnerable. Here are five things I shared about the way I believe we should rethink the humanitarian system to help tackle the climate emergency: ◾ The climate crisis represents an existential crisis for all of us, and as aid workers, we are on the frontlines to witness the increasing impact of more severe and frequent climate disasters on vulnerable communities. In 2020 alone, loss and damage from climate disasters exceeded $258 billion globally. That is more than the entire global annual aid budget. ◾ There is no greater challenge today than getting ahead of the climate crisis: however, it is not the only challenge we face as humanitarians. In the last decade alone, humanitarian needs grew by over 330% as a result of multiplying conflicts, extreme poverty and growing global instability. ◾ We must become climate-smart and include climate action in all aspects of our programming, instead of creating new silos of “climate action’ or separate ‘climate responses’. This means better using climate data and forecasts, strengthening disaster preparedness and early action, and investing more in climate adaptation and resilience. This also means, of course, leading by example and reducing our carbon footprint. ◾ Ultimately, we cannot do this alone. Governments, regional bodies, financial institutions, and the private sector must step up. The climate financing gap is estimated at around $2.4 trillion per year. This figure no doubt seems very high. However, last year, the world spent $2.4 trillion in military and defense and another $7 trillion in direct and indirect fossil fuels subsidies. The money is there. It is simply not going to the right place. ◾ It is easy to become jaded when working in the aid world. I am not. I know that if we combine our efforts, we can move mountains. We have seen it time and time again when we thought everything was too tough. Thank you so much for hosting me. This kind of debates forces us to raise above the daily operational struggles and look beyond this year’s issues to think about how we can collectively improve the sustainability and impact of our work. #AidExNairobi #climatecrisis AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Event

The aid and development sector has seen many challenges over the last few years. Multiple concurrent humanitarian crises, the rise of AI in humanitarian aid, and funding difficulties have all shaken up an already uncertain landscape. The Duty of Care Pavilion and Conference at AidEx, in partnership with International Location Safety, aims to illustrate and examine how to help staff in the field deal with these difficulties. Visit the pavilion to take part in the Crisis Management Workshop on Day 1, which displays the complexities and challenges of supporting staff and their families in times of extreme duress and watch compelling panel discussions. On Day 2, watch the mock court room which demonstrates the pressures of giving evidence and how discrepancies arise. Learn how to put safeguarding into action, insure the uninsurable, cultivate resilience and much more...
