✈️ Check out this visual of the NOAA HurrHunters flying over the eye of Category 5 Hurricane #Beryl to gather data from the air. This supplements data collected from the oceans and satellites. 🌀 Beryl has weakened to Category 4 as it heads to Jamaica, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surges. 🤝 Monitoring and forecasting hurricanes is a massive team effort. 📰 More on WMO news: https://ow.ly/ZbFu50Sukih

🌪️ Hurricane Beryl becomes a powerful Category 5 storm, marking the earliest occurrence of such an intense storm in recorded history. 🚨 The National Hurricane Center warns: "Category 5 Beryl still intensifying in the southeastern Caribbean... expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica later this week." 🛰️ Satellite GOES-16 provided this view, showing Beryl churning in the Caribbean Sea. 🔗 More information: https://lnkd.in/exHzDkWA

🌪️ The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has declared Tropical Cyclone Freddy to be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record, at 36 days. 🔗 Full story: https://lnkd.in/epZjff4E

🌪️ Hurricane #Beryl has strengthened to an extremely dangerous Category 4 Hurricane. ⚠️ Life-threatening winds and storm surges are expected to begin in the Windward Islands, according to the US National Hurricane Center. 📈 Never has a tropical cyclone intensified so rapidly so early in the season. Beryl is the strongest Caribbean hurricane this early in the calendar year on record. 🌊 This hurricane season is expected to be extremely active, not least because of very warm ocean temperatures. 🏝️ Small islands are at the frontline of extreme weather and climate change impacts, and they are priorities for many WMO initiatives and #EarlyWarningsForAll. 📸 NOAA Satellite and Information Service 📢 For updates, follow: http://hurricanes.gov/

My thoughts are with the people of the #Caribbean as #Hurricane Beryl approaches the Windward Islands with potentially life-threatening winds and coastal flooding. The US National Hurricane Center, which is the World Meteorological Organization regional centre, has issued Hurricane Warnings for Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago. Never has a tropical cyclone intensified so rapidly to Category 3/4 so early in the season. This season is expected to be extremely active, not least because of very warm ocean temperatures. Small islands are on the frontline of extreme weather and #climatechange impacts and are priorities for many WMO initiatives and for #EarlyWarningsForAll. 🚨 #EarlyWarningsForAll is about saving lives and livelihoods by giving people, especially the most vulnerable, advance notice of natural hazards. 🌍 Rebecca Manzou, the Director of the Zimbabwe Meteorological Services Department champions the Early Warnings for All initiative. Following Tropical Cyclone Idai, the Government of Zimbabwe invested in a radar network covering the country to ensure everyone's protection. This is #ClimateAction. 💔 However, major gaps exist, especially in small island developing states and least-developed countries. Over the past 50 years, 70% of all deaths from climate-related disasters have occurred in the 46 poorest countries. 🫱🏽🫲🏼 We cannot stop. We can make this a reality, saving lives and building resilience in a changing climate.
