Clean Air Zone one year on

The Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in Portsmouth was put in place in November 2021, meaning it has now been operating for a year. Over this time we have been monitoring air quality in the CAZ as part of our city-wide air quality monitoring programme.

The data for the past year is in the process of being quality checked by central government, and we are expecting the first year report back from the government in autumn 2023.

It’s worth noting that the government will require at least two consecutive years of data to begin looking at whether or not the CAZ has led to a satisfactory drop in air pollution in the area. If the CAZ is found to be compliant with UK recommended air quality levels after this time the government will let us know what our next steps can be.
