I noticed that one of my uploads, :File:Motorola 6800 Assembly Language.png, was recently "compressed", reducing the file size from 322KB to 141KB. I have reservations about unnecessary edits to files because things are often lost in the process. By today's standards this is a small file; most of my contributions are measured in MB. I examined compressions you made and quickly found several that had no significant reduction in size. :File:2005 Penny Obv Unc D.png :File:HideoNomo.png :File:Central London Railway 1913.png. Is this necessary? Since all revisions are stored on Wikimedia's servers, the edits increase the amount of storage used. --Swtpc6800 (<span class="signature-talk">talk</span>) 21:05, 21 April 2012 (UTC) |

:Hey, you're right. Some of my compressions might have been a bit pointless, but I'll be more careful in the future. It's not the storage space I'm concerned about, it's the time it takes for someone to download the image. It's also worth noting that the compression is lossless, so no image data is lost. With the 3 images you mentioned, I reduced the file sizes by 0.3%, 5% and 27%, so the first one wasn't worthwhile, the second one maybe, but the third one was definitely worth doing. In the case of your image, I reduced the file size by 56%, which means it will be downloaded more than twice as quickly, which will be very noticeable for someone with a slow connection - 46 seconds vs. 20 seconds for someone on a 56kbps dial-up connection. "Proto-Semitic"[sic] letters
There is no such thing as "Proto-Semitic letters"[sic] or a "Proto-Semitic alphabet"[sic]. Please don't contribute to spreading the myth that they existed... AnonMoos 15:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, what exactly is it that I have done? I have never heard of either of those things... Mahahahaneapneap 17:43, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- You uploaded Image:Proto-semiticZ-01.png, which is poorly-named... AnonMoos 22:54, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- All I did was upload a slightly smaller file containing exactly the same image with exactly the same file name. The previous image had existed with that name for 3 years. Mahahahaneapneap 16:41, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Please give images good descriptions
I noticed you've uploaded Image:Actual Satu Mare county CoA.png and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:06, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.
The images we would like you to check are:
