game screen shots

Did commons have any template that copyrights game screenshots?

Jrc261094 20:04, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may upload screenshots of programs released under a free license, usually programs released for Linux or Unix. Use {{free screenshot}} on the image description page to tag these screenshots. You may not upload screenshots of copyrighted computer games like Doom, Halo, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat or Maxis' SimCity. Thuresson 20:19, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Camarines Sur seal

Aside from the fair use claim this work is a product of the Republic of the Philippines, and as such its terms of use are laid out by the Republic Act No. 8293.

I'll be uploading more official seals for our WikiBikol project. --Filipinayzd 10:25, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Winston_Churchill_as_a_young_man.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. Länsvapen

Hej.

På en uppladdningssida står det att man ska fylla i: "Source like a web link or give a statement like 'own work'." --Boivie 06:53, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
/Lokal_Profil 13:14, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jag ska ordna detta. Thuresson 14:36, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you flickrreviewed this image, but it has no license information (it never had). On Flickr, it says CC-BY-NC-ND. Not exactly compatible with the policy of the Wikimedia-projects, right? I'm not very much at home here on Commons, and since you're an admin and the reviewer of this image: could you make sure this image this image is deleted? Galwaygirl 15:14, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is and has always been licensed as CC-BY-2.0. If the photographer changes the license is irrelevant to WikiCommons. Thuresson 16:56, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to have been a coding error in the flickr template mening that the license template was never displayed on the image page. That has now been fixed. /Lokal_Profil 17:27, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, great. Should have looked in the code, so! Thanks for checking it out. Galwaygirl 00:04, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tobias Viklund

Thuresson 22:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jag tar därför för givet att du såg den stora röda mallen med texten "This image does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be deleted seven days after this template was added: (6 November 2007)." Thuresson 23:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nahuel Moreno

Hi,

I have been contributing to the article on Nahuel Moreno on the Spanish version of Wikipedia for more than a year. Recently, all the photos have been deleted, although most of them were published in Argentina more than 25 years old (and the others were released for free use by the organizations that took them). I thought I had been clear when filling the data requested when uploading the files, but I guess I wasn't. I must admit I find WikiCommons interface quite tricky, so it is always very difficult for me to avoid having my images deleted.

Anyway, I am sure that all the images that were being used in that article and were deleted can actually be used here without breaking any law. Can you help me restore them?

Best regards,

Maximiliano

Hi, Thank you for your answer. I guess I'll need some technical help, because I do not know how to edit the corresponding tags (as a matter of, fact, I do not understand which are the tags that should be edited, etc.)
Anyway, thanks for restoring the images. Some comments:

These three images: Image:Nmoreno entierro.jpg , Image:Moreno iicongreso.jpg , Image:Nmoreno 1940.jpg were published at www.marxists.org (MIA - Marxists Internet Archive). There's a disclaimer at the bottom of their home page stating that "All material within these Archives, unless noted otherwise, is public domain". I had only added some info regarding the SLATO (International Center for Orthodox Trotskism), which is the organization that had uploaded the files to marxists.org

Well, these are the facts, but I don't know how I can add that info to these three images so I can avoid having them deleted again. Any help?

Regarding Image:Discursomoreno.jpg . It was taken and first published on 1973 in Argentina. It was published on Avanzada Socialista, Nahuel Moreno's journal.

Image:Moreno.JPG was first published on January 1987 on Correo Internacional, international review published by the LIT.

There was also Image:Logicamoreno.gif , which was deleted before (not by you). It was the reproduction of the cover of a book published on 1973 in Argentina. Isn't it right to upload it to WikiCommons?

Please help me find the right tags for all this pictures, so we can keep them within the Wikipedia project. Thanks a lot for your effort.

Best regards,

--Maxijozami 16:51, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry to bother you again, but I can't manage to find the right license for the images. Could you please give me a hint, based on the description I made, or suggest me someone who could help me? Thanks a lot, and sorry to be a pain in the ***... --Maxijozami 15:06, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thuresson, you deleted the Haskell logo (2006-03-23T11:50:47) because it is already in the english Wikipedia. But why is it erased here but kept there? Wouldn't it be more wise vice versa? Being stored in commons all Wikipedias could use it without redundant copies. Or is there a way to use the image in other WP - for example the German. -- zOiDberg (δ·β) 20:15, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. Uploader claimed that it was fair use to upload this logo to WikiCommons. However, WikiCommons do not allow any kind of fair use images, see Commons:Licensing. Fair use images are eligible for speedy deletion. Thuresson 12:08, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my image of Colin Firth

Re [1] - the copyright holder has granted permission to use under the GFDL, as found at OTRS Ticket #2007120810007569. Just mentioning it to you in case you think my upload was bad - I received permission from the photographer :) Thanks for keeping an eye out ~ Riana 17:02, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Could you tell me why have you deleted almost all my photos??? All of them had been made by a photographer who died in the 20s...!!!! JC

You do not provide any licensing information or sources to your uploads. Thuresson 07:09, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OMG,

Four wrong deletion warnings

Hello!

You have just added deletion warnings to four images I uploaded. Have you checked the sources at all? Those are 18th century paintings. All artists have died far more than 70 years ago, and there is not the slightest doubt about the identity of the artists. No permission is needed for such material. I will delete the warnings because they are simply wrong according to the applicable copyright laws and the Wikimedia Commons rules. Do me a favor and carefully check my sources the next time. And if you don't read German, ask somebody who can. Thank you. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 02:55, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My German is quite good, thank you. Please show that these German photographs are more than 50 years old or that the photographers have released them under a free license. See also Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag#Germany. Regards, Thuresson 03:37, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This won't be necessary. Photographic reproductions of paintings that are in the public domain because the creator of said paintings died more than 70 years ago are not protected by copyright themselves. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 12:22, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: The German Wikipedia summarizes the applicable laws as follows in their image copyright FAQ: Werden zweidimensionale Vorlagen (Gemälde, Fotos, Zeichnungen, Kupferstiche, Radierungen, Holzschnitte, …) lediglich reproduziert, sind die dadurch entstandenen Aufnahmen nach herrschender Meinung nicht selbst urheberrechtlich geschützt. (When two-dimensional original works (paintings, drawings, etc.) are only reproduced, the resulting photographs are not protected by copyright) [2].That says it all. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 12:38, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They are not protected by copyright, but they are protected under a neighbouring right for so called "simple photographs". Please see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. Please add the missing information within 7 days, thank you. Thuresson 16:51, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are wrong. The right for "simple photographs" applies only to original work of no artistic or creative character. Photographic reproductions of two-dimensional artwork are not considered simple photographs, but mere reproduction of existing content (commonly described as "Abfotografie" or just "Wiedergabe"). Ask any German Wikipedian who is active in the field of image rights. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:09, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please add the missing information within 7 days, thank you. Thuresson 18:11, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I have done something that is more promising. I have moved the images back to de:WP, where this is accepted. Feel free to delete the four images, but kindly inform me if you are planning more deletions. Have a nice day. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:32, 21 December 2007 (UTC) Oh, by the way - what became of the I always enjoy taking part in a debate? Anyway, congratulations. Wikimedia Commons has just lost a contributor. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Welcome.gif.

If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Question

Hello. I'm just curious. Why do you say All alarm bells go off when I see Template:Copyrighted free use? I kinda like this one, as it's the least restrictive (except for PD). Is it the little © image that sets off the alarm bells? User:Rocket000

At least in the past it used to be the first choice for users who didn't have a clue about copyright but thought it was good enough for use in the non-commercial Wikipedia. It was often combined with the lack of proper sources. The template is useful although I think there are better copyright licenses. Thuresson 07:31, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of press fotos

Hi, my Swedish isn't that good, so could you check images: Image:Husmark pehrsson.jpg, Image:Ask.jpg and Image:Anders Borg.jpg‎? Are they really free use? Anyway they should be tagged with some other tag that {{Cc-by-3.0}} --Tomia 17:17, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The permission is now available in Swedish, German and English. But it doesn't say who gave the permission and how he or she can be contacted for verification. The photographer should give the permission, not a press liaison. Also, the photographer should explicitly use the words "GFDL" or "Creative Commons" in his permission. Thuresson 19:20, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also the permissions need to specifically allow commercieal use and derivative works. /Lokal_Profil 10:01, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.

Are we clear? because if we don't, I can give you the phone number of the photographer... Gridge 23:08, 1 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Please forward a written permission from the photographer to publish the photos to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and reference it on the image description pages. Regards, Thuresson 03:19, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. But how can I "reference it on the image description"? I'm not a member at the OTRS club. I guess you are, can you take care of that? Gridge 14:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you. I'm not a member of the "OTRS club" though. You can find a a list of people who are at Commons:OTRS. By "referencing it" I mean that you may go to Image:Moshe Katsav, by Amir Gilad.JPG and click on "Edit" at the top of the page and write with your own words that you have sent a permission to the email above. That should hopefully be enough. Thuresson 15:24, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg

Hej. Fernan (discusión) 19:03, 2 January 2008 (UTC). Sorry for my Swedish!.[reply]

Terebici River

I found the image on ro:wiki. It was loaded a long time ago by a registered user called User:Ugo. He claims that he has produced the picture, and that as author of the picture he releases it for public use. I have no idea on who user Ugo is. In any Wikipedia users do not have to give their real name. What do you want me to do to find out the information you require. If the picture is released by its author what else is there ask for? Afil 04:51, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your replay. The question rather concerns the detailed map and if "Ugo" also drew that. Thuresson 12:25, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry,

but here is the Authors Name and a date, for me its enough. Regards, __ ABF __ ϑ 12:31, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is no mention of neither author nor date. This painting is hanging at Gripsholm castle in Sweden. Who photographed it? Where was the reproduction printed? Thuresson 12:52, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Yesterday I sent an e-mail with explicit permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, but (until now) I got no answer. The author of that photo is my sister and I have her permission to publish the photo, but (of course!) there is nothing written about this. I take full responsibility for this (which is what I wrote to permissions). Regards, Salvatore Ingala 18:48, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply. Your permission from your sister is good enough for me. If necessary, a volunteer who works with permissions may contact you if necessary. You can also edit the image description page to clarify that you have permission from your sister. Regards, Thuresson 21:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Korda's foto

Hi,

My picture was a copy of Jim Fitzpatrick painting, which was published by Fitzpatrick himself as copyright free. I also added a link to the Fitzpatrick's official site to support this affirmation.

Besides, the original photo is still in Commons, and it is well documented that it is now legally in the public domain...

Regards,
--Jgaray 14:56, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I genuinely thought that Cuba had a copyright of 50 years for photos but I stand corrected. Image undeleted. Thuresson 15:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I see that you are an administrator who has warned this user about copyvios in the past.

S/he has uploaded Image:Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni.jpg, which is tagged as PD-Self but bears a suspicious resemblance to an image on this website. I have asked the user to clarify the copywrite status of the image, but thought it would be a good idea to enlist you to look into it.

This IP address is static, so if you want to respond on my (nonexistant) talk page I'll be able to find it. 206.246.160.29 17:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Porilaisten marssi

Why you deleted both Albert Edelfelts Porilaisten marssi painitngs? Seems to that you uploaded black/white version. OK, it is higher res, but it is still black and white. --213.186.251.234 08:56, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The two photos by Hannu Aaltonen are protected by Finnish copyright law. Under Finnish law all photographs are protected for at least 50 years after creation and there was no information that Aaltonen permitted Wikimedia to use the photos. Thuresson 11:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting the Duplicates

Hi, I'm having a problem with those deleted pictures:

09:17, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:The Washington Times front page 329px.jpg" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:The Washington Times front page.jpg)

09:20, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Dalton School logo.png" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:Dalton School logo.png)

09:17, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:The Washington Times front page 329px.jpg" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:The Washington Times front page.jpg)

"The Fair use" you have suggested doesn't work, I used those pictures on Czech Wikipedia and it's ipossible to get it work without uplouding them on wikimedia, could you advise me how shall I fill the Licence for copying those pictures on mediawiki, I spent quite a lot of time in it and it was useless... Or if you want to try that it realy doesn't work from en:Image:... have a look at http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Times I used the image as you suggested and no luck. If the licence for copying of the picture was filled wrong, I'm realy sorry, but if not, please put the images back, as I spent quite a lot of time on filling those licences.

Thank you for your message. Every image on WikiCommons must be licensed under a free license. The Washington Post is protected by copyright and the photos you uploaded are used at English Wikipedia under something called "fair use". WikiCommons and English Wikipedia are different projects with different rules. WikiCommons do not allow images used under "fair use" and such images are usually deleted very quickly. I don't speak Czech but there is information about "fair use" at Czech Wikipedia, cs:Wikipedie:Fair use. My only suggestion for your article is to tke a look at the photos at Category:Washington Post. Thuresson 23:19, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Borttagning av bild

Hejsan, vänligen förklara varför du tog bort bilden Charles XIV John of Sweden.jpg. /Slarre 15:36, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enligt svensk rätt skyddas alla fotografier i minst 50 år. Det gäller även fotografier av oljemålningar. Man ka läsa mer om detta på Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.

Delete pictures

Can you please delete Image:20057.jpg, Image:Poltava2.jpg and Image:Prestebakke.jpg, I'm the uploader, and I don't really know who the author is (on 20057 the copyright expires in 2022). /Snillet 19:42, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Situationist International

By now it seems the last of one of the SI pictures I've uploaded -- Image:Situationist-International-InOurSpectacularSociety6.gif -- is about to be deleted. I'm not very sorry about this, as they aren't essential for the articles and of bad quality.

Nevertheless I'd like to ask your opinion about how to keep this or other SI pictures in th future. All publications of the SI were under anti-copyright. So I'd like to (re-)upload some images from repositiries like http://www.nothingness.org/SI/ if we can add "anti-copyright" to our allowed licenses.

--Pjacobi 00:59, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. I'm sure the images could be kept if at least there was a link to a website who verified the copyright status of images from SI. Concerning "Anti-copyright", perhaps you could use the tag "{{PD-because|reason}}"? Thuresson 12:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Jackie_Fisher.jpg.

Thank you. Hard neck

You are the most embracing contributor on Commons this far. The community will have to mature without both me and you. (Not because I expect you to understand a syllable of 'community'). Idiot! Bye
