File:Ethofumesate-3D-balls.png is superior & wikipedias which have an Ethofumesate article (fr, de) will never use ball-sticks-models Kopiersperre (talk) 14:30, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep - Look at every molecule I've made since the ethofumesate one. It's no accident that (almost) every ball-and-stick model is accompanied by a space-filling one. Why do I go to the trouble when ball-and-stick is 'superior'? Because there are advantages to each format.
Ball-and-stick is better at showing the bond identities, and is less likely to obscure parts of the structure. However, space-filling is better at showing the overall shape of the molecule. Certain characteristics, like planarity, become much more apparent in the space-filling version. It also shows the sizes of the atoms more accurately (insofar as it is possible to accurately show the size of an atom). There are many different reasons why a chemist would choose a space-filling model, such as showing which parts of the molecule are more exposed to attacking groups.
I don't have the time of day to decide whether ball-and-stick or space-filling is most appropriate on a case by case basis, and it would be counter-productive if I did. I upload both so that anyone who decides to use those images has a choice between the two styles.
And what do the French and German Wikipedias have to do with anything? By that logic, we should delete the ball-and-stick version too, along with every image on Commons that is not in a WP article, regardless of EV.
My regards,

Keep Space-fill is one of several standard representations of a molecule. A en:Space-filling model illustrates the physical extent of a molecule, something not as evident in a en:Ball-and-stick model. This image is within COM:SCOPE for educational use, it's a high-quality image with no better one in this style. Commons is not just for supporting the wikipedias. User:Kopiersperre, your noms are starting to become disruptive. DMacks (talk) 16:05, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I will never again suggest a space-filling or a ball-and-stick model for deletion. Sorry for burdening you with this request.--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:24, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
