foundedin Antioch. When the church in Jerusalem heard thesethings, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. Barnabas soon wentand brought the converted Saul to Antioch, and these two menpreached in Antioch for about a year. Here in Antioch thebelievers in Jesus were first called Christians. 2. The First Missionary Journey. While Barnabasand Saul were thus ministering in Antioch, the Holy Spiritcalled them to preach the gospel to the heathen nations. Thenthe church at Antioch solemnly consecrated them to this workand sent them out as missionaries of the gospel. They firstsailed to the island of Cyprus and then to Asia Minor. Herethey preached in the cities of Antioch in Pisidia, Iconium,Lystra, and Derbe. Everywhere their preaching was gladlyreceived by the Gentiles; yet in nearly every place some unbe-lieving Jews opposed them and caused them to be persecuted.On their return journey they strengthened the believers in theirfaith and ordained elders in all the churches. After the return of theapostles from their first missionary tour, some Jewish con-verts came to Antioch and caused a disturbance in the church,because they taught that the Gentile Christians could not besaved unless they accepted and observed all the ordinances ofthe Jewish law. Therefore the church sent Paul and Barnabasto Jerusalem to present this question before the apostles andelders of the church.
