Nazi propaganda photo of Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend, HJ) member operating a switchboard at the HJ offices in Berlin (Haus der Reichsjugendführung? Ost-Berlin 1933–36) (FHM-282374 Frihedsmuseet, Nationalmuseet, Denmark)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Nazi propaganda photo of a member of the Hitlerjugend (Hitler-Jugend, HJ, the Hitler Youth), the youth organization of the Nazi Party (NSDAP), taken at the main offices in Berlin between 1933 to 1936.
  • 'From the Hitler Youth's house in Berlin, Switchboard.' (Danish: Fra Hitlerjugends hus i Berlin Omstillingsbordet. )
  • The image is one of likely several in a series of propagandistic press photographs showing Hitler Youths posing in various activities, probably at the Haus der Reichsjugendführung in Kaufhaus Jonass, a store and office building that was "aryanized" by the Nazis.
  • The paramilitary 'brownshirt' (light khaki) uniforms suggest that the photo was taken in the period from 1933 to 1936. This type of uniform was introduced in 1933, but by 1937, black visors and a second pattern eagle-and-swastika emblem on the caps had become common.
  • The picture shows a Hitler Youth operating a telephone switchboard.
    • The boy is holding a telephone receiver and has placed his uniform cap on top of some papers on the table next to the device.
    • On top of the device is an electric desk lamp (office lamp)
    • Key components of the telephone switchboard (German: Klappenschrank) include the plugboard, which features multiple jacks for connecting calls, the cords and plugs used to establish connections, indicator lamps to signal incoming calls, and the rotary dial for manual dialing.
    • A wall telephone can be seen on in the background to the right
    • The star (pip) on the shoulder strap indicates Kameradschaftsführer
  • Image copied from Frihedsmuseets fotoarkiv. The photo archives of the Museum of Danish Resistance (Frihedsmuseet, 'the Freedom Museum') document the struggle during the German World War II occupation of Denmark from 1940 to 1945. The museum is a cultural history museum under the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet).
