At ageof twelve went to Virginia City, Nev.,where he entered pub. school, remov-ing after one year to Reno, where hecompleted his ed. He was apprenticedto a blacksmith but after five yearssecured a position with Reed & Emer-sons Minstrels in San Francisco, andlater with Lew Dockstader, with whomlie went to New York. After two sea-sons he joined George Thatcher andthen Den man Thompson in The OldHomestead. An engagement followedwith William West, after which he en-tered vaudeville with great successuntil 1907, when he became a starunder his own management in SilverThreads, with which he continued ontour until Apr. 1912, when ne engagedin mercantile pursuit
