Summary
[edit]DescriptionSilkworm Cocoon purchasing in Antioch.jpg | Stereoscope photograph by Underwood & underwood,1895-1900 titled "Expert purchasing silk cocoons, for export to France, Antioch,Syria". The cocoons were exported mainly to Lyon, France, to be reeled, and the manufactured silk was exported to New York, London and back to the Middle East. Local manufacturing was limited to silk used in the production of the Damascene Brocade. The coastal regions of Syria from Antioch to the mountains of Lebanon, where the Mullbery trees were grown were active in the industry. "This is very busy time of the year, and as you see, the factory has animated, picturesque and eminently Oriental appearance-groups of men, women and children weighing, bargaining, and selling cocoons; horses, mules, and donkeys loaded with cocoons; boxes, sacks, and bags filled with cocoons". THE LAND AND THE BOOK, W.M. THOMPSON, 1886. |
