Français : La statue représente un faune, ou un satyre, entièrement nu à l'exception d'un nébris, ou peau de panthère habituellement portée par ces créatures mythologiques. La peau est nouée au niveau de l’épaule droite. Le faune lève le bras droit et tient dans sa main une grappe de raisin, symboles des vendanges, de Bacchus et du vin. Dans sa main gauche, un pédum ou une crosse de berger, autre pièce iconographique commune aux représentations de faunes et satyres.
Aux pieds de la créature, sont disposés d’autres objets typiques du monde dionysiaque, une chèvre et un instrument utilisé pour faire la fête. Les yeux du faune étaient des pièces séparées, probablement fabriquées à partir d'une pâte ou de pierres précieuses. La statue est taillée dans un ancien marbre rouge de Laconie, de la péninsule du Péloponnèse en Grèce. H. 167,5 cm. Cette statue a été trouvée en 1736 dans la Villa d'Hadrien à Tivoli. L'œuvre est une réplique de l’époque d'Hadrien (117-138 après J.-C.) d’après un original grec de la fin de la période hellénistique. |
