A guide employed, we made a trip up along valley by the old Twitchen road, usedyears ago and grown up with alder, fir, andbalsam so as to be almost closed; up the oldcaribou path, worn at some places three feetdeep in the moss and soft black mire bycountless herds of caribou that had passedbeyond. To one looking backward beforecrossing over the divide, as far as the eyecould see extended the blue waters of the bay,with the snow-capped mountains in the dis-tance, and in the foreground the park-likelowlands where the stately caribou roamedat will. Our objective point was a small lake nestledsomewhere in the direction we were going,among the pine, birch, and spruce, but onthe way we missed the location and got lostin the undertaking.
