Description
English: The photograph was taken in morning sunlight with relatively dark bush background. Midges of an unknown species were in a mating assembly and the photograph was taken with fixed focus aimed at the most convenient part of the swarm, catching a few in useful focus. The exposure was 1/100 sec, and the number of beats of the wings of the insects in focus can be counted if the picture is seen at maximal magnification. The frequencies seem to be consistent at 800-900 per second, because pretty well the same number appear in all the specimens in which the beats are clearly in focus.
