With 96.55% of the local population, the region is predominantly inhabited by the [[Tigrinya language|Tigrinya]]-speaking [[Tigrayans|Tigrayan people]]. The Tigrinya language belongs to the [[Semitic languages|Semitic]] branch of the [[Afro-Asiatic languages|Afro-Asiatic]] family of languages. Most other residents hail from other [[Afro-Asiatic languages|Afro-Asiatic]]-speaking communities, including the [[Amhara people|Amhara]], [[Irob people|Irob]], [[Afar people|Afar]], [[Agaw people|Agaw]] and [[Oromo people|Oromo]].
