META II was first written and hand-compiled in META I<ref name=Schorre>{{cite book|author=Dewey, Val Schorre|url=http://www.hcs64.com/files/pd1-3-schorre.pdf| title=META II: a syntax-oriented compiler writing language|year = 1963|publisher=UCLA Computing Facility|location=UCLA|ref=METAII}}</ref>, a hand-compiled version of META II. The history is unclear as to whether META I was a full implementation of META II or a minimalist subset required to compile the full META II compiler.
