Israel in Asia or Europe?

[edit]

@ Galatz: you reverted my change to placing Israel in Asia on the grounds that "Although in Asia they compete with Europe and are consistently listed as such in templates."

Two questions:

At the Olympics, each nation competes independently, and not as part of a continental or regional bloc. There is no "Asia" or "Europe" competitive group at the Olympics. So since Israel is, objectively, in Asia, why should it not be placed in the Asia list here?

Which other templates list Israel as part of Europe and why do they do so? Is the reason there valid here? Please bring the examples and explain. -- 22:38, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

The template organizes the teams by their regional blocs. Just look at it and its pretty obvious. Otherwise please explain which continent is "Oceania" because I have never heard of it. "Americas" last time I checked is no a continent either.
Also for examples you don't have to look for Template:Nations at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Template:Nations at the 2008 Summer Olympics, etc. Its like that for everyone since Israel has been part of Europe. Its how its consistently is. - 00:52, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Americas obviously refers to both the North and South American continents and Oceania is also a recognized name among English speakers for the the continent of Australia and the countries in the Pacific Ocean. In this template, all the countries listed in those groups belong to them geographically. Israel, however, clearly belongs to Asia geographically, and is where most people would logically look for it first in the template. You haven't offered a reason for why it listed with Europe other than just asserting that it is so. However, since you do show that previous Olympic templates have already set a precedent for this error, and I am not going to waste my time litigating this with you, I'll will leave your unreasoned and incorrect revert as it is. -- Chefallen (talk) 02:25, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe Israel, Cyprus and European states should be listed under European Olympic Committees, rather than Europe, since they belong in EOC but not in Europe. And there only reads "Europe", without any explanation. It's the same for other years, as is mentioned above. 85.76.79.164 (talk) 15:55, 11 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
