Antonio Pio Saracino (born in Puglia, Italy in 1976) is an Italian architect, artist, and designer based out of New York City, known for his public art projects The Guardians: Hero and Superhero.[1][2] His work includes buildings, monuments, and modern furniture, and several of his designs are part of the permanent collections of museums such the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Art and Design in New York City and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.[3][4] Saracino's work has been shown in international exhibitions and received reviews in publications such as The New York Times, Architectural Digest, and Vogue.

Saracino has been deemed to be "among the most prolific Italian designers abroad and has been beatified by serial accolades."[2]

Career

Early years

Antonio Pio Saracino[1] was born in 1976 in Puglia,[5] Italy.[6] In 2003,[1] he graduated cum laude with a Master's Degree[6] from Rome's La Sapienza University of Architecture,[3] where he worked as an assistant professor of architectural design.[1] Early in his career he worked with several Italian and US architectural firms, including Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome.[1] Since 2004 he has been collaborating[7] with New York-based architect Steve Blatz, with projects including interiors and design competitions.[7]

Exhibitions, projects

His designs and work have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Europe, the United States, South America, the Middle East and Australia.[1] In 2007-2008, after winning the Agorafolly Art competition in Brussels, Saracino was commissioned to design a public art project in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the European Union.[8]

In 2010, his work was selected for the 54th Venice Biennale.[1] The same year Industry Gallery in Washington DC opened Nature / Data,[9] Saracino's first solo U.S. exhibition. The exhibition had two large‐scale installations and abstract chair designs built from materials such as plywood, metal, carbon fiber and synthetics.[10] In March 2011 his show Second Nature included 10 pieces that "explore how the man-made morphs into a natural element in the created world."[6][9] Unitas Multiplex - A New World was a diverse solo exhibition by Saracino shown in June 2011 at the gallery LipanjePuntin artecontemporanea in Italy.[5]

His design for the Sydney house of Olympic gold medal diver Matt Mitcham was included in several international exhibitions. "Diver’s House" was inspired by the architecture of the Sydney Opera House, with a shell designed using an algorithm describing the geometry of coral.[11]

In 2011 he built "GATE 150," a monument commemorating the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, which was installed in both the Caraffa Museum in Córdoba, Argentina[5] and the MuBE Museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil.[12] Saracino designed the Formula One World Championship trophies from 2010-2013.[13]

In 2012, Saracino designed the interactive installation "Arches of Hope" for MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation,[14] which was broadcast live in Times Square.[15] In 2013, New York’s Museum of Arts and Design featured Saracino’s work in the exhibition Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital.[16]

In Dubai, in 2013, for Design Days Dubai,[7] Saracino created an interactive in-store exhibit for Bloomingdale’s “Celebrate the World” campaign.[3] Saracino’s Star furniture collection became available at Bloomingdale’s in the Dubai Mall at that time.[7][17]

Also in 2013, Saracino was commissioned to design the public art project The Guardians: Hero and Superhero.[18] The 13-foot-high statues – one stainless steel and one marble – are in the north and south entrance of the public plaza at Three Bryant Park.[19]

Reception

Saracino was named one of the world’s 25 most interesting trendsetters by New York’s ARTnews magazine,[20] and one of the Top Ten Italian Architects under 36 by New Italian Blood.[6]

He's also won a number of awards, and is a four-time winner of the Future Furniture design competition. His 2007 design work for Tibi Boutique in Soho, New York was featured in Interior Design's "Best of the Year" issue.[1] Also in 2007, he received the American Architecture Award from the Chicago Museum of Architecture[1][6] for the Seed House. The shape of the house was inspired by a seedpod.[5]
