    Hi! Is my sandbox (the one where I conduct tests on), visible or editable to other people? I want it to be completely private, since I do not want other people to see content that I personally test with. Is there a way to make it private?     @Wikipedian10282 No there isn't, everything you can edit on WP can be seen by anyone who knows where to look. So there is absolutely stuff you shouldn't do as as tests/practise even in your sandbox, like copypasting copyrighted text into WP, WP:BLP-violations etc. For complete privacy, don't use WP.     They are used for the reason we've been (mostly) using them — to provide easy access to further information when the reader may not completely understand what has been written. Bazza (talk) 13:46, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Wikipedian10282: you can think of it as a core technical policy of Wikipedia, embedded in the "wiki" part of name, and they are a defining feature.     I don't see the duplication that the OP is talking about, in either Tamer of Tigers or ru:Укротительница тигров. Blaze Wolf, the longer word means a female tamer, the shorter a male tamer. The film is about a female tamer, so that is the word in the title of the ru article. I don't know know why the OP is talking about an article about a male tamer, unless perhaps they have used machine translation on the title of the English article.     Creating a template

    I have been working on updating lists of state ballot measures for a while now and am dead-set on fleshing out all 50 states. I am wondering what the process is to create a template - I have a basic template set up in my sandbox that I would like to eventually put on each article once I get more than 50% of them done. To do that would I just copy/paste the source into a page titled Template:Ballot measures footer or is there a different process to follow?     @ThadeusOfNazereth: That's it. You might have used {{United States topic}} to reduce coding a lot but there is no need to convert it now. The name parameter must match the page name to make correct V T E links. You currently have name = Ballot measures in the United States which is a better name anyway so it would be Template:Ballot measures in the United States, but I suggest the shorter Template:US ballot measures. The parameter is not shown to readers. I see you have implemented a state parameter. You can document it and add some categories with:

    Desktop reading visualization

    Wikipedia desktop version in English has a bad visualization, as the text compasses the whole screen, unlike other websites whre the text is more centralized in order to provide a better and a more pleasant reading. I entered wikipedia in Portuguese (usually I only use it in English) and it has this visualisation which is better for reading.     Can't create "Final Legacy"

    I am trying to create an article on the 1985 video game "Final Legacy". When I try, it tells me the page cannot be created. This is odd; my last attempt to create a new page went to Draft, which was quickly approved, but this time I do not see that option.     IP addresses can't create directly into mainspace. It has been like that for a few years now. Depending on when you made it, you may have been able to do it previously, however, you did say that you created a draft before, so there's no change.     I tried to create another new article today, MK5056, and the same behaviour occurred. Once again there was no offer to create it in draftspace. I checked the logs and there is no previous article under this name or any other reason I can see. @Lee Vilenski: I'm not sure I understand your last comment... perhaps this: I created a draft for a different article, Atari Word Processor. I did so by typing in that term to search, which took me to the "no article" page, which included a link to create it in draftspace using the wizard. In this case, and MK5056 this morning, when I did precisely the same thing, no offer to create it in draft appeared. I was simply not able to create it, period.     @Lee Vilenski: Nope, not mobile, desktop. Playing about a bit, I used the same search bar for "articles for creation" and was taken to a page that did include the link to the draft wizard.     Hello IP! You really shouldn't be attempting to do so as that would be considered paid editing. Most of the time if someone offers to edit an article for money it's a scam. If there are things you think should be corrected then submit an edit request on the relevant article's talk page and an editor will eventually come by and either implement the request, or decline it with a reasoning as to why. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:08, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    You may, but I would advise against it. Some of the firms offering a service may be legitimate, professional, and competent: many of them are scammers, preying on people who have the mistaken impression that Wikipedia is a place to promote yourself. None of them are in any way authorized or supported by Wikipedia, but as long as they follow Wikipedia's policies, they are permitted to work and to offer their services for hire. Whether you hire somebody, or your employees do it, they must declare their status as "paid editors".
    What I would recommend is
    1. one or more of your employees create accoumts (all accounts must be individual, and their names must not suggest that they represent an organization. But "Jackie at XYZ.com" would be acceptable. Or they could just use their real names, or pseudonyms).
    2. They read WP:PAID carefullu, and make the mandatory disclosures.
    3. They use the Edit request mechanism to request changes to the article. They should be as precise in their requests as possible (eg "Add the following text after XXX" or "Replace the sentence XXXX by YYYY", and give references - independent if possible - for any information they wish to insert.
    4. Recognize that the article does not belong to you, and Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.

    Finding unlinked mentions

    @Doug butler: "Scott Hicks" -linksto:"Scott Hicks (director)" gives 46 results. That's low enough to manually examine whether it's the right Scott Hicks.     Non-notable compositions

    Two articles: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of compositions by Matthew de Lacey Davidson and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew de Lacey Davidson were recently closed as a result of delete. The linked compositions Quartetto dell'Arte, Symphony No. 1 in 20 keys ("Letter to the World"), and The Singing Lesson were created by the same editor. Since the composer and composition list are no longer deemed notable for inclusion; should each of these articles be put up for AfD? Each have been created by the same editor and any references are a clear COI due to primary sources. I cannot find notable performances or reviews. Thanks.     Archived talk section breaks {{Update}} box

    At the top of Atmospheric methane, there has been a "This article's factual accuracy may be compromised due to out-of-date information" box since February 2020. The link to the talk page leads nowhere, because the relevant discussion has been archived. Surely if the banner is still relevant then the discussion isn't ready to be moved to the archive.     Hello, Renerpho. Archiving of talk pages is usually done automatically on the basis of the age of the entry. It is easy enough to find the title of the section ("Preindustrial CH4 indicates greater anthropogenic fossil CH4 emissions") from the link, and then search the archives of the talk page. But in fact Talk:Atmospheric methane has only one archive, so it is easier to go straight to it, and find Talk:Atmospheric methane/Archive 1#Preindustrial CH4 indicates greater anthropogenic fossil CH4 emissions, where you will see that there was just one reply, on the same day as the original post, pointing out that the issue is mentioned in another article (Methane).     omitting repetitive links to specific page numbers of an internet archive book?

    Is there any way (via some template magic or...?) to omit long repetitive base URL fragments from links to specific page numbers of an internet archive book?

    At the article golden ratio I added a bunch of specific page links to the internet archive scan of a book by Livio. The markup for these citation footnotes was previously {{sfn|Livio|2002|pp=7–8}} and now looks like {{sfn|Livio|2002|pp=[https://archive.org/details/goldenratiostory00livi/page/7 7–8]}}. Having the specific links to cited pages seems like a valuable service to readers (makes it much easier to follow citations to the source), but having to clutter up every link with the repetitive https://archive.org.../page/ part does a disservice to editors or source readers, and is annoying to write.

    Has anyone ever thought of designing a template such that we could put a base part of a URL like this one time on the page, and then refer to it with some shortcut? Perhaps a fork of the sfn template could slurp that base URL from some (hidden) parameter of the referenced citation template, and then combine it with a parameter of the footnote template including the extra portion of the URL to append? –jacobolus (t) 22:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Removing "link" designation from name entry

    Jonilight3, from your edits I think you are using the visual editor. Technically, to remove a link, click on it and press the button that has a link with a line through it.
    From a policy point of view, your name should not be added to the list, nor should the list even exist, because it is irrelevant information. Listing distant descendants of a person is an unproductive task. For example, take Genghis Khan. He has millions of living and nonliving descendants, many of whom have Wikipedia articles.     @Bvpicts: The file you removed (File:Alex Prager in 2022 02.jpg) actually seems OK for Wikipedia purposes since it appears to have been uploaded by the person who actually took the photo. Are you claiming that this photo wasn't taken by its uploader Cmichel67. On the other hand, the file you uploaded (File:BTS Alex Prager TabithaDenholm.jpeg) has some issues that need to be resolved in order for it to avoid deletion. Do you mean c:COM:CONSENT when you say that the first photo was uploaded without our consent? That's really the only "consent" that matters when it comes to photo copyright matters and Wikipedia (Wikimedia Commons), and it would only matter if you (or whomever is "our") actually owns the copyright on the photo; otherwise, your "consent" isn't really needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:02, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    While we may possibly take what Prager 'wants' into consideration, neither she, nor anyone representing her is required to 'consent' to Wikipedia using a properly-licensed photo of her. I've posted a more detailed message on your user talk page explaining what needs to be done in order for the file to avoid deletion. If you continue to remove the template without addressing the relevant issue in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policy, then not only will the file end up deleted but your account will likely end up being WP:BLOCKed by an WP:ADMINISTRATOR for edit warring.     If you are in any way employed as part of Alex Prager Studio, then you are in breach of Wikipedia's terms of service by editing the article without making the mandatory declarations as a paid editor. I have tagged Alex Prager as having been edited for payment. In any case, please study carefully the policies on editing with a conflict of interest, and do not make any further direct edits to the article: use edit requests instead.     Late Problems with Using Wikipedia

    As of the last month, or so, I am continually being delayed in my private research when using Wikipedia. These delays include "Captha" error messages (often with no image to `verify') as well, when using Wikipedia links to latitude-longitude coordinates with ACME Maps, it does not allow me delete old `Marks', add new `Mark"; or view list of `Marks'. Why is this happening? Is it because I often work online or up to 16 hours at a time? My research is important to me and keeps my mind stable (since 1979).     "private research" sounds like reading but if you refer to editing Wikipedia then you can avoid captchas by creating an account and becoming autoconfirmed. Coordinates in Wikipedia usually link to pages like [1] but the listed services are external including ACME Mapper.     Random pages

    I value the random page search every morning (10 minutes worth) because it occasionally finds a subject which interests me and so extends my knowledge. However and naturally, many pages which are found have no interest to me. Particularly biographies and 'places of interest'. Is there any way that I could exclude such 'hits'.     Interesting idea! The information and tools to do this are all available in Wikidata, but turning it all into a simple one-click interface would be a challenge. Wikidata is a database with structured information about many things, specifically including Wikipedia articles. To use it effectively, you need to learn some basic stuff about relational databases, and some simple stuff about its query language.     Not all drafts need to go through Articles for Creation although those written by IP editors and new accounts do.     Using PrimeHunter or similar tool to find REAL What Links Here

    I wanted to find what REALLY links to an article, and when 'What links here' gave me far too many, I realized that the TRANSclude feature of wiki may be getting in the way.

    Trying "Hide transclusions" didn't seem to help, but in my looing around I found '[2]' but I don't think I know how to make it operate, or at least the pink-colored "Code that you insert" atop the .JS made me think it's time to admit I need to ask at HELP DESK. Can you point me to something already documented/semi-cookbook style (This help question is long enough; I don't want to have someone write something just for my benefit, at least unless it can be repackaged for future use).     @Nuts240: The pink box at Special:MyPage/common.js is a standard warning. Most editors probably ignore it and add any useful sounding script from random users. Most articles which contain this construct have it at the start of the article when a term is being defined in a language other than English, so meeting MOS:FOREIGNITALIC's requirement to use italics; see English Channel for an example.     Hello Matt, thanks for asking first, WP prefers that you don't edit the article directly yourself. We need something acceptable to source "retired" to (per our WP:BLP rules). In this particular case, a WP:ABOUTSELF source like your Facebook (it has the blue checkmark) would work, so if you add something like "Retired from mma in 2018" at say [4], that should be usable.     Help with Template:navseasoncats in two categories

    The two most recent college basketball seasons with independent teams are Category:2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball independents season and Category:2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball independents season. But since they're 7 seasons apart, when you go to those two categories, it's not possible to easily navigate between them via {{navseasoncats}} at the top. Is there a way to modify {{navseasoncats}} in each of those cats to make the succeeding / preceding NCAA independents season category appear?

    Can't create a redirect

    I am trying to add a redirect for MK5056. Following the pattern I saw yesterday, I am not allowed to do so, and there is no offer to make a draft.

    1) what is special about this page that a draft is not being offered? There is no entry in the deletion log and no other reason I can see. 2) as this is a redirect, a draft is not appropriate. What can I do?

    Hi Brooksjim. I just have three comments. Number one is that infobox images generally should not be formatted as thumbnails as explained in WP:IBI. Since most infoboxes have set up to automatically size the main image so that it can be seen accessed by most devices, there's no need to use a thumbnail-type markup for size purposes. In addition, since most infoboxes have a |caption= parameter for images, there's no need to use a thumbnail-type markup for caption purposes. Number two is that you should carefully read through WP:COI and WP:PSCOI if you're personally or professional connected to Barry and do your utmost to follow guidance given on those pages. Lastly, number three is that you should read c:COM:Own work and make sure any files you upload to Commons are really your "own work". Generally, the copyright of a photo is "owned" by the person who takes it, and only the copyright holder of a photo can claim it as their "own work" and give their c:COM:CONSENT. The subject of a photo doesn't typically own it's copyright unless it has been transferred to them.     Hi Wakelamp. It looks like you copied and pasted parts of that citation from some other website. Sometimes when you do such a thing, some characters are added as full-width characters instead of half-width characters. In this case, it looks like one spaces between the words was a full-width space which seem to be causing the citation syntax to treat it as a line break.     To be honest, I'm not sure why such a thing happens with some websites or devices and not with others. I notice it lot when editing from my smart-phone since full-width seems to be the default setting. I believe there's a way to change things so that it isn't, but it doesn't bother me all that much. It's also something that's not immediately noticeable to most people unless they're specifically looking for it. It's easy to notice if you're using the source version of the editing window (not sure about the visual editor version) since things like appostrophes and quotation marks tend to stand out because it looks like they are double-spaced even though they really aren't. Probably the best thing to do for citations would be to just use the "Show preview" button to check for issues before hitting the "Publish changes" button.     One other thing I notice about that article is that the syntax for some of the files being used contains empty MOS:UPRIGHT parameters (i.e. there are no scaling factors being provided).     I'm under the impression that both of these articles, Activstudio and Activprimary could be nominated for deletion under G11. Activstudio was written by the supposed developer of both programs and the Activprimary article seems to be almost a direct copy of the Activstudio article with minor changes. both articles are entirely written like advertisements and seem to be at a point where they would need to be entirely rewritten to not look like such.

    Can some one give me some direction in how to get our company description factually listed to appear within Wikipedia ?

    Scott R. Gardner We can't, because that's not what Wikipedia does. You seem to have a common misunderstanding about Wikipedia; it is not a directory where mere existence warrant inclusion, and merely documenting such existence is sufficient. This is an encyclopedia with criteria for inclusion, called notability, such as a notable company. An article must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose on their own to say about a company and why it is significant- not what a company wants to say about itself or things like press releases, announcements, or interviews. Please see Your First Article. The vast majority of companies do not merit articles. If your company does truly merit an article, ideally you or anyone associated with you should not be the one to write it.
