The middle portion of the lede repeats the phrase "sho(o)t down" five times in close succession, which to my ear is past the point at which it starts to grate. Plus, "shot down in space" is conceptually questionable. Suggest diluting this with near-synonyms such as "destroy", "intercept", "neutralize", and maybe "down", "bring down", et cetera.
