I've been working with another user (Pete Nelson from UKY) to create an improved version of an article in userspace. (For specifics, the article to be improved is Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy and the userspace draft is User:WikiDan61/LATE). I've checked with WP:WikiProject Medicine and have received at positive (not rousing, but at least positive) reception regarding the current state of the draft. I'd like to merge the contents of this user-space draft into the mainspace article while properly giving attribution to Pete Nelson for his contributions in the draft space. Vis-a-vis Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy, last month User:Pete Nelson from UKY completely rewrote the article, in the process deleting all but one of the references and adding his own sci journal articles as references. His efforts were correctly reverted. He should review Wikipedia:Expert editors and WP:SELFCITE. David notMD (talk) 13:01, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As for the draft now at User:WikiDan61/LATE I am guessing/hoping that it includes the references that are in the existing article. Large chunks of text are not referenced, and of greater concern, I counted 17 of the 65 refs as having P Nelson as first author. I strongly recommend that the two of you collaborate on a revision that has all content referenced and as few as possible citations of Nelson et al. As for acknowledging contributions, Wikipedia does not do that in articles. I suppose on the Talk page of the article, you could add a new section stating that Nelson contributed to the revisions. Little stuff: Reference numbers are to be placed after punctuation. Sci article publication dates are month and year, as in May 2024, not 2024-05. Authors in journal refs are last name and initials rather than full first name. A shortcut: enter a PMID number into https://tools.wmflabs.org/citation-template-filling/cgi-bin/index.cgi and it generates a reference. I sam not against improving medical/health articles (I have raised several to Good Article status in my area of expertise), but the more common practice is to incrementally improve the existing article rather than replace entirety. I understand how the latter approach can be attractive when so much needs to be improved. Lastly, Wikipedia recommends "BRD", meaning be Bold in your edits, but if Reverted, take the dispute to the Talk page of the article for a Discussion-effort to reach consensus. Many articles have multiple 'watchers' who have set an option so that when they log in they are notified of any edits to articles they watch. I actually edited the wikipedia page to conform with Wikipedia standard page formatting for disease (it was like an essay, before and was rated to be basically substandard for that reason. Honestly the basic substance of the page is not that different, it's the same disease.)

Some of the references in the revised page are redundant, i.e., they're the same ref but given different numbers. I don't know how to clean that up?

@128.163.238.97 and Pete Nelson from UKY: If you see red error text in your citations, they should be fixed. Specifically, the date format "yyyy-mm" is not valid. "yyyy-mm-dd" is valid, but if there is no specific day of publication (only a month), then it must be formatted as "<Month name> <year>". Also, per WP:REFPUNCT, citations always follow punctuation, not precede it. (The result should look like this,¹ not this².) WikiDan61^ChatMe!_ReadMe!! 20:22, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FYI for anyone late to the show: This is about User:WikiDan61/LATE, which is being proposed as a complete replacement of Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy. One unresolved issue us that at least 12 refs, some used multiple times, are co-authored by Pete Nelson, a person involved in replacing the original article. Hello! Is there a way to suggest or nominate particular articles for improvement? I've put a lot of work into a couple pages, but they still need lots of work that I don't have the time or energy for. I know there are no deadlines on WP, so it's not exactly an urgent matter, but these pages are culturally important and I would love to see them get some serious attention from editors besides myself. There was an age when even English-language Wikipedia was young and perhaps more exciting than it is now, and when WikiProjects can be said to have flourished. But -- however understandably and excusably, given the circumstances -- a high percentage of the articles were crap. @Wafflewombat: That's a good question. Wikipedia generally felt more lively before c. 2011, but I don't remember if that translated to WikiProjects specifically. The number of active editors fell by a third between 2009 and 2014 and has since remained roughly the same, but the number of WikiProjects has increased. It stands to reason that less people spread over more projects would lead to a loss of activity. On the other hand, there are projects that have managed to remain active (e.g. WP:MILHIST, WP:MED), including some created after 2014 (e.g. WP:WOMRED). You really need a proactive core group to keep them going and I suspect that the majority of WikiProjects just never had that. – Joe (talk) 19:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:School board members, Category:Members of district health boards in New Zealand and Category:Provincial board members in the Philippines looks a little too diverse to me. Maybe if a category was limited to boards of an organization. By the way, I found Category:Grey's Anatomy task force administrative board members. The phrase "board member" to me immediately conjures up the idea of a member of the board of directors of a company, i.e. a director. Hi - I'm trying to add a Red Link to 'Pero Jones' on the Pero's Bridge page, because the bridge is named after him, and he needs his own page as there is a lot of published information about him, which is unusual for an enslaved person in Bristol at that time. I'm planning to do this in the not too distant future. But when I put in the double brackets round his name it creates a hyperlink to the Pero's Bridge page, and I can't work out why it does that, or how to give it the red link. Help me please!

Hi Ruthhenrietta the reason it links back to the Pero's Bridge article, is that Pero Jones is currently a redirect to the bridge article. Click on Pero Jones and than look at the very top of the Pero's Bridge page and it should say "(Redirected from Pero Jones)". If you click on that link it will take you to the redirect, which explains the link is

With possibilities: This is a redirect from a title that potentially could be expanded into a new article or other type of associated page such as a new template. The topic described by this title may be more detailed than is currently provided on the target page or in a section of that page.

We don't want a circular redirect whilst there is no article on Pero Jones, but that description should encourage you to consider creating such an article. - Arjayay (talk) 14:25, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Hi Ruthhenrietta. Pero Jones is a redirect to Pero's Bridge because he has a significant mention there and doesn't have his own article. It for example helps users who search information about him by entering his name in the search box. It also means he can be linked in other articles like History of Bristol#Slave trade. But a link in Pero's Bridge is unhelpful if it just redirects back to the page itself. I have used {{no self-redirect|Pero Jones}}.[1] This omits a link when it would redirect back to the page but makes a link if it becomes an article or a redirect to a different article. The redirect is appropriate now but see Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects if you want to make an article. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:35, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ruthhenrietta. While it is possible to create an article by simply editing the redirect page, I would advise against doing it this way unless you are confident that you can in your first edit create something that meets the basic requirements for sourcing and establishing notability. Generally it is better to create the new article as a draft, and then either submit it for review, or (if you are confident it will pass review) making a move request to move your draft over the redirect. @AndroidEnthusiast See Samsung DeX. The technology is a way to add standard desktop features like a keyboard, mouse and monitor to your phone. In the process of expanding an article and am struggling to determine what I'm doing wrong with this ordered list. It seems fine, but whenever I try to review changes or see a preview of it, the list is invisible. Clearly, I goofed somewhere, but for the life of me can't see where. @CurryTime7-24: You have not followed the instruction at {{Ordered list}} which states that "equal signs (=) must be escaped or replaced with {{=}}". Hi everyone,

I created a page Draft:Left Angle and it was initially declined for the sources, so I read the information about in-depth, reliable, secondary, and independent sources and resubmitted the article with new sources a few times but it keeps getting rejected.

I really want to get it right and have even used the template below to try and organize and analyze the sources in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines. Could someone help me better understand which of my sources (if not all of them) don't meet the requirements and why? Since I don't know if they just all don't meet the requirements or if some are ok, I would like to continue to work and improve on the article starting with the ones that are deemed ok.

Initially I saw a draft article someone started on the product Draft:Left Angle Autograph which appeared to have been rejected several times a few months ago and I added edits to it (waiting to see if it gets approved). Draft:Left Angle Autograph was Declined (not Rejected, which is a more severe action) for the reasons given. I’m a motion designer looking for a new software to use and came across a comment mentioning this company I had never heard of. Then I looked it up and liked what I saw but while looking it up I noticed it didn’t have any wikipedia page (except the product page but I’m still learning about it) so I made this one. Our industry is a bit of a mess right now for several reasons (among which the government is actually suing the company who’s software I use atm) and a lot of motion designers are looking into options so I want to make sure we have access to any information that can help us find tools. Ok. In that case, I think it would be very helpful if Wikipedia also added a “minimum time in existence” or a “minimum times mentioned publicly” condition to their guidelines because it would be a lot easier to understand their reasoning. There is a big difference imo between a source not meeting requirements in itself (reliable, independent, in-depth, secondary) and a page being declined simply because they want the company to be mentioned more in general. Click on "Insert" button. From there, a dropdown menu will appear. Then click on "Templates". You will be asked to enter the name of the template. Here is an article about templates that I think will be useful to you on deciding which info box is best for your draft that you are currently writing on: Wikipedia:Templates. Alternatively: Find an article on a similar subject, WikiPhil012. (If your draft is about a soccer player, find an article about a soccer player. Et cetera.) Act as if about to edit its source. Copy the relevant infobox. Cancel the edit. Paste the infobox into your draft. Edit the content of the infobox. I was editing on en.Wikipedia today and used my iPad tethered to my iPhone via Blue tooth. I could edit with my iPhone but not with my iPad, getting the message, ~ ip blocked as anonymizing relay. Was it a config error on my part? Back at home, no problem with either device connected to my LAN with persistent IP address. I see an error on kamala harris page. It says she was born 1964 and at age of 19, in 1958.... "She moved to the United States from India as a 19-year-old graduate student in 1958," however the math says 1964 plus 19 is 1983 147.81.37.181 (talk) 06:03, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe that sentence could be made clearer, it is obvious when you read it in context of that paragraph but if you got there by, for instance, searching in-article for the word 'India' then you might not realise that it's not talking about Harris. The @ was first used in Aragon, in an aragonese text (the Taula de Ariza). Not in spanish, aragonese, yet it was discriminated against by JMF, who belives Aragonese to be a simple dialect of Spanish.

The current edition of the article appears to correctly identify the document as having been written in Aragonese. This appears to be a content dispute over the "has commonly been used in X,Y,Z", where JMF is not suggesting that the terms are interchangeable but that Spanish deserves the weight in that sentence, which I'd concur with. On the page regarding the activist Carlos Fernandes, I used the newsletter from the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA) to prove he had affiliation with that organization. Is this use of a self-published source ok? I figured a source from the organization itself would be able to support whether or not he had any affiliation with them. You may also be interested to know that your idea is not really new; using a clock as a source of random numbers is a well-known technique, but is rarely used in cryptographic applications because it produces very poor quality random numbers. The output of a clock is pretty predictable except for a small number of bits at the low end. If you believe that Centanni meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, so that there could be an article written about him, then you may add a Wikilink looking like [[Joseph L. Centanni]], which will display as Joseph L. Centanni - a redlink indicating that its destination does not currently exist.

If you mean a link to an external source, then no, we do not put external links in the text of an article. They may sometimes be added to an "external links" section at the end of an article, but there are restrictions on what links may be added, and it would not normally include information about a police chief. Wikipedia only hosts articles about subjects which meet its criteria for notability - which generally means that there is enough independent reliably published material about them to base an article on.

Cogsan, for starters, the two buzzwords involved are acronyms, for the pronounceable ones, like NASA or UNICEF, and initialisms, for the ones you have to spell out, like, LGBT or SPQR. You don't say what you do specifcally want, so we're somewhat guessing about what a "fix" would be. But for example, I did something.[3] You had said "|thumb", which sends it to the left or right side and by default makes it smallish. You wanted it to be content itself, so it needs to be larger and ideally in the text flow itself. See Help:Pictures for details of the layout options. But editorially I think the image itself is not appropriate. If placed as an image that will fit on non-huge screens, it will be too small to read easily. If it's large enough to read, it will not fit on screens. And as a policy concern, is it a copyright-violating cut'n'paste from a non-free journal article? @HKB3HKB3: Are you asking about images or text? All text on Wikipedia is licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0 and can be reused for any purpose if you provide attribution. See Wikipedia:Text_of_the_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_4.0_International_License. Most images are licensed similarly, although some are in the public domain free of copyright, and some are used under WP:NFCC and are not freely licensed. HKB3HKB3, please be specific rather than vague. Which file? Some files on Wikipedia are in the public domain and can be used without any restrictions. Most files are copyrighted and then freely licensed under an acceptable Creative Commons license. Such files can be re-used for any purpose with the restriction that the creator of the file must be attributed. A minority of files are restricted by copyright, and are used only in accordance with Wikipedia's stringent policy on use of non free images. These are low resolution images of iconic photos, portraits of dead people, corporate logos, and book and music covers, film posters and the like, used for identification purposes. So, give us the specific file name and we will explain its status.

I'm currently rewriting an article that was originally a machine translation of another language Wikipedia. If I were to rewrite every single bit of text myself, which I feel I may have to because of quality concerns, would the talk page still require the disclaimer? It seems misleading to have that information on the talk page if the content has been removed. I will echo what David said: many new editors expect that writing an article will be as easy as creating a page on social media, and have a frustrating time, because we have quite strict standards about verifiability and notability and other matters. I strongly advise that you do not even think about writing a new article until you have spent at least several weeks working on existing articles and understood some of our core principles.

You absolutely do not need to pay anybody. Many people choose to make donations to the Wikimedia Foundation (and many do not), but there is absolutely no connection between any donations and what happens to your edits: nobody editing Wikipedia has access to records of donations.

If you are contemplating paying somebody to make an article for you, I would advise: don't. Nobody offering such a service is in any way authorised by Wikipedia, and many of those offering are simply scammers. ColinFine (talk) 10:49, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Really, no. If you are so famous that people with no connection to you know about you and have published about you in reputable places (newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.) then in time, perhaps, someone with no connection to you will create and submit a draft about you. I am a member of the Water Positive Think Tank and have been involved in drafting the Wikipedia page about our Water Positive Initiative. To our surprise an individual made major modifications of the text, changing its page name, deleting sections regarding its history, changing its intended content and defining purpose. The inventors of the Water Positive Initiative were deleted along with their photos and volunteer members on the Water Positive Initiative (Water Positive Think Tank.

I spent all night trying to correct these changes but was surprised this morning to find the site blocked my phone IP address and put the site under vandalism protection. Furthermore, I received a response to my email of a threatening nature.

Please advise on the proper steps to take. It appears that the attempt of the corrector is to try to insert another organization within this initiative who are not the inventors of it. Greentn2 (talk) 13:19, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greentn2 both of you are in the wrong here. I appreciate that you decided to contribute to Wikipedia, but if you are trying to promote an organization (in this case Water Positive Think Tank), then Wikipedia is not really the right platform. Wikipedia is firstly an encyclopedia.

If you are being paid to make these edits, then you are actually required to disclose that you receive compensation for editing.

You should talk with Techlang who reverted your edits. They are being harsh, but the core idea is what I said above, they thought you were just spamming content about Water Positive Think Tank (thinking it was vandalism). @Greentn2: Welcome to the Teahouse. As far as I can tell, the article started off focusing on the concept of water positivity and you were the one who added the organisation. As you have a conflict of interest, I would have reverted you as well as some of the language used was promotional or otherwise inappropriate for an encyclopedia. Please disclose your relationship, preferably on your user page, and make edit requests on the article's talk page instead of directly adding the text into the article.

That said, there was no reason for Techlang to move the page, as it was fine before and the current title goes against the Manual of Style's guidelines. It would have been preferable for the two of you to have discussed the issue beforehand. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:43, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
