The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the Map workshop. Anyone can make a request for a map to be created or improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.
You are encouraged to share information and request advice from others. Also see possible conventions toolbox, map tutorials and topographic map tutorials.

Advice to requesters
What do we do?
  • Sourced requests: If possible, please try to provide a reliable source to create a map. This includes a map already on Wikipedia with a reliable source or an external link.
  • Please check: Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • Direct collaboration: Some mapmakers are especially interested by one topic area. If you notice a mapmaker fitting your needs, consider asking on their personal talk page to request maps.
  • {{Reqmap}}: To request a map, you can also tag the talk page of the article in need of a map with or {{Reqmapin|Australia}} (articles then appear in Category:Wikipedia requested maps)
If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

Bihar legislative assembly election, 2010

Article(s): Bihar legislative assembly election, 2010

Request: Could someone please a make a map like this [1] from the one currently on the page? It seems the external one would be copyvio.

Also, after the polls are announced on November 24 then wed need something like this. Thanks. Lihaas (talk) 13:37, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Using the SVG that map file was derived from would be better. I find it a little odd that it's not just a clipped region from the SVG file. gringer (talk) 21:39, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, on further observation, that map won't do. The administrative boundaries aren't detailed enough for the election boundaries. gringer (talk) 12:44, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To demonstrate that, I've extracted out the relevant portion of the locator map and coloured regions as close as possible to the boundaries in the external image (using 4-colour colours plus two more taken from the locator conventions). gringer (talk) 13:12, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine-Bulgarian wars 893-927

Article(s): Byzantine-Bulgarian Wars, Battle of Boulgarophygon, Battle of Achelous (917), Simeon I of Bulgaria, Treaty of 927 (when created)

Request: I have created a very rough and ugly map of how I approximately imagine it. The sources are two maps of Atlas of History [2] and [3] (the second is not very clear). The hachures to the west notify the Principality of Serbia which was annexed between 924 and 931; those to the south mark the territorial extension at Byzantine expense in 904 therefore the first black line is the border when Simeon I became ruler in 893; the second one - in 904. The dotted line marks the temporary military border between 913 and 927; while the red line is the border as it was agreed by the peace treaty in 927 and which stayed unchanged until 971.

I am not sure I have cropped the very best base map; you can use another one if it would be better. In my ugly map, I have put the main cities which should be placed in the map. I think that such a map will be useful to illustrate the border changes of that important episode of the Byzantine-Bulgarian war. Regards, Gligan (talk) 16:51, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For WikiProject Asian Americans

Article(s): Wikipedia:WikiProject Asian Americans and associated uses, such as in the talk page template, userbox, and elsewhere

Request: Requesting an orthographic projection (similar to File:North Atlantic Treaty Organization (orthographic projection).svg ) with the United States (and its territories) and those nations listed in Template:Asian Americans highlighted. Request that the highlights for the United States be that of the Flag of the United States, and the highlights of the Asian Nations either be that of their flags, or multiple shades of a single color. RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 17:46, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the map File:Orthographic projection centred over Magadan.png would make a good base?--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 13:25, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why no takers? Should I simplify my request? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:03, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How can this request be improved so that interested graphic artist would create such an image? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 11:34, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Malaysian map

Article(s): Malaysia

Request: Is it possible to make Malaysia located more centrally? I've tried contacting a couple of people who appear to have made these sorts of maps before, but haven't got a response. Something rotated slightly more towards the west than the Indonesian one would be perfect. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 14:48, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Map remake

Article(s): Tornado watch for the former, Severe thunderstorm watch for the latter

Request: I didn't notice this at the time these files were made (refer to this previous GL request), but the county borders are way off from what they are supposed to be. Compare for example the Kansas and Oklahoma county borders (especially Osage County, Oklahoma and Wabaunsee County, Kansas. The borders seem to be generalized, making the counties misshapen. If possible, could someone please remake these maps with better county borders? I will supply the data used to create the maps in .csv format the same as I did with the previous request, so any graphists who take this request will need to email me so I can reply with the data. Thanks in advance, and there will be a barnstar awaiting a job well done. Ks0stm (TCG) 03:00, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blank SVG Robinson Projection Map with Second-Level Subdivisions

Article(s): Political division, Administrative division

Request: Blank maps with second-level divisions are useful beyond the two articles in question, but the Lambert cylindrical projection creates an unpleasant shape distortion at the poles (e.g. the third and fourth images). The Robinson projection is superior in this aspect (e.g. the first and second images). If it becomes desirable to create maps with third-level, fourth-level, etc. divisions (as in the fourth image), I feel that they should be created and maintained separately, so that all are available, rather than just the most extensive level of subdivisions. Subdivisions of a country should be grouped so that an entire country can be easily filled. If individual subdivisions need to be filled, then the user can ungroup them. The same goes for smaller subdivisions. There should be some way to visually distinguish second-level subdivisions from first-level subdivisions (unlike the third image). I prefer that subdivisions have thinner outlines than the country they pertain to (e.g. the second image) rather than giving them different outline colors (e.g. the fourth image), but the community may disagree with me on this point. Note that there is a python script available for manipulating the first image that may be useful for this project. Just to be clear, I want the new map to be based on the first image; the other three are only provided for reference and/or comparison. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 16:10, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

North American Area Code Maps

Article(s): List of NANP area codes

Request: There are many North American area code pages that do not have any maps, and many of the ones that do have maps do not conform to the WikiProject Maps Best Practices. The whole section could use some map standardization.

I just started on it myself - Area codes 601 and 769, but need a lot of help. -Dolenath (talk) 20:51, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Illinois Territory (in the War of 1812)

Article(s): Battle of the Sink Hole, Campbell's Island, Illinois, Credit Island, Fort Bellefontaine, Fort Cap au Gris, Fort Johnson, Fort Osage, Fort Shelby (Wisconsin), Siege of Prairie du Chien, War of 1812, and potentially Illinois Territory in the War of 1812

Request: The image uploader has retired from Wikipedia unfortunately. 1. The label for Indiana Territory is incorrect and should be removed. That area was all part of Illinois Territory, no part of Indiana Territory at that time is shown in the map. 2. For use of the image in the article, Illinois Territory in the War of 1812, a orange dot and label for Peoria at about the e in Illinois River as well as a numbered red dot there. Not sure how that could all be squeezed in. 3. convert to SVG. I don't know anything about this but someone has tagged the image for this. Rmhermen (talk) 14:16, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stations of the International monitoring system

Article(s): Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Preparatory Commission and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

Request: I'd like to have a map on the 300+ (!) monitoring stations of the International Monitoring System for the CTBT similar to this map. They come in 5 types (primary seismic, auxilliary seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustics and radionuclide) and 80% of the stations are completed. Latitude/Longitude Locations are at a US site (at "ANNEX 1 TO THE PROTOCOL") and the status is at the CTBTO prepcom site. I suggest a legend comprising

  • open symbols for non-certified installations (no specification of planned, testing, construction etc)
  • closed symbols for certified installations

using separate symbols/colours for the 5 station types. An additional symbol (asterix, cirkel around it?) identifying those 50% of the radionuclide stations that will do noble gas monitoring (ctbto site above) would be nice as well.
I realize this might be a lengthy task, but appreciate anyone taking it! L.tak (talk) 10:23, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Animated historical map of Bulgaria

Article(s): Bulgaria, History of Bulgaria

Request: An animated map of this type would be useful to represent the territorial changes of the First and Second Bulgarian empires, with a timespan between 681 and 1396. To make things more compact, a square format map based on this geographic rendition would be good. Source maps with available content are provided above. I'm sorry for making a bit complicated a request, but as far as I know these types of maps can be requested here. - ☣Tourbillon A ? 13:22, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment The above sequence, if converted into an animated map, doesn't include periods when there was territorial extinction eg post-1015. These would need to be included. DeCausa (talk) 21:26, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I'm adding a map of the region under Byzantine rule, post-1018, but considering that the timespan encompasses the creation and the collapse of the empires, an extra map with the Ottoman occupation wouldn't be that necessary. - ☣Tourbillon A ? 06:02, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Map of towns represented by delegates during All-Albanian Congress which resulted with Albanian Declaration of Independence

Article(s): Albanian Declaration of Independence

Request: I would like to have a map with clearly defined borders of four Albanian vilayets and all signatories of the Albanian Declaration of Independence presented with points (towns) on the map, depending on the city they represented during All-Albanian Congress. When reader point to the specific town I would like that he would be presented with a small text (within some kind of pop out infobox if possible) with names of all signatories of the Albanian Declaration of Independence from that city, and the name of the villayet. A map of the four albanian vilayets can be used for the basis of new map together with the data about signatories of the Albanian Declaration of Independence. There are signatories from Romania, that should be listed within separate legend, if possible. In case that any additional information is needed, please do not hasitate to contact me on my talk page. Crown of Castile

Article(s): Crown of Castile

Request: Can someone create some two higher quality maps of the Crown of Castile? The first an Orthographic projection version using Spain as a template, The second a "normal" 2D map using the Location map as a basic template. This map with the borders of the current regions [6] should help.

Graphist opinion(s): Regarding your first request: The Crown of Castile was a medieval state, while the orthographic projection map you suggest using as template depicts modern-day states and borders. Therefore it'd look kinda weird (and wrong) to have medieval borders in a 21st century map, unless you can find a medieval (or early modern) orthograpic projection map, we could use as a template. Now, regarding your second request it is possible, anyone capable enough willing to take the request?--Sisyphos23 (talk) 10:28, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Queen Maud Land

Article(s): Queen Maud Land

Request: The article has a basic map showing the outline of the territory, but the article could use a more in-depth map (I plan to start improving the article for GA). I have found a map I like which is more or less how I imagine it at the Norwegian encyclopedia Store norske leksikon [7]. If someone could make a map similar to this it would be much appreciated. The text in the cited map is in Norwegian, but I should be able to translate it for a new map if needed. – Bellatores (t.) 18:44, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The island of Montserrat

Article(s): Montserrat

Request: The German version of this map is far superior in terms of information. It includes the names and boundaries of the Parishes of the island, and also includes in red the "Exclusion Zone" and shows its boundary in red (exclusion zone is due to the active volcano). Can we improve the English version of the map in a similar way to the German one? Also please note: the Key in the English version needs to say "Mountain peak" not "Mountain pick"! Thanks so much, Invertzoo (talk) 13:26, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note that all of the towns in the exclusion zone are uninhabited and uninhabitable. Many of the roads and settlements are completely covered in ash and pyroclastic flows and hardly exist as mappable objects any more. Check Google maps "Island of Montserrat" in map form and satellite image to see what I mean. Invertzoo (talk) 23:32, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Map of Verendrye journey ?

Article(s):Louis-Joseph Gaultier de La Vérendrye

Request: This should be fairly easy if someone wants to. All that is needed is to draw a line on an existing map, add some labels and possibly crop the original map to a smaller area. Everything needed is in the article. It should be called VerendryePossibleRoute or similar since the route is not certain. 'Mandan Village?' should end in a question mark. Millstone Township, modest edit to existing map

Article(s): Millstone Township, New Jersey

Request: There is an existing map of the county and the placement of the township (Commons, File:Millstone twp nj 025.png), however, it appears to badly misplace the town of Shrewsbury, which is shown located at the left between Roosevelt and Allentown, but according to sources belongs closer to Red Bank way across the county ( see Google Maps, the short link it gave me is being blacklisted ). The original mapmaker seems likely gone (the map was created in 2005), but it might be possible to at least erase Shrewsbury from the map, I gave it an attempt myself but I'm just not skilled enough to get a clean result. Simply removing Shrewsbury would be preferable to the current state, moving it correctly would be even better. --joe deckertalk to me 03:18, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
