The New Carrollton–Fort Totten Line, designated Route F6, is a weekday-only bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the New Carrollton Orange Line station of the Washington Metro and the Fort Totten station on the Red and Green Lines. The line operates every 30 minutes during peak hours and 60 minutes all other times, weekdays only. F6 trips are roughly 60 minutes. When Parkdale High School is open, select trips are added to the F6 to operate between New Carrollton station and Prince George's Plaza station only.[1]

F4 & F6 were both created as brand new Metrobus routes to replace the segment of the former J2 & J4 streetcar lines between Silver Spring & the Beltway Plaza, which was discontinued on February 19, 1978,[2] shortly after the Silver Spring Metro station opened. During this particular time, J2 was truncated to only operate between the Silver Spring Metro station & Montgomery Mall,[2] while J4 was truncated to only operate between the Silver Spring Metro station & the intersection of East–West Highway/Old Georgetown Pike & Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda.[2] F4 & F6 operated together as part of the Prince George's–Silver Spring Line (later renamed the New Carrollton–Silver Spring Line in 2007) from February 19, 1978 all the way up until June 17, 2012.

The route originally operated between the Silver Spring Metro station and Greenbelt Center (Crescent Road & Gardenway),[2] F6 operated on a very similar routing as the J2 & J4 streetcar lines between Silver Spring and the intersection of East–West Highway & Ager Road[2] and then operated on the former F9 streetcar line routing via Ager Road, Nicholson Street/Ager Road Service Road/Kirkwood Place/Ager Road. F6 would then operate via Hamilton Street, Queens Chapel Road, and Belcrest Road to get back to the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center, and follow the remaining segment of the J2 & J4 streetcar lines' routing between the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center & Beltway Plaza, via the University of Maryland College Park Campus[2]. The only difference though, would be that F6 would provide new Metrobus service between the Beltway Plaza & Greenbelt Center (in Old Greenbelt), which the former streetcar lines (Metrobus routes J2 & J4) did not provide.[2]

1993 service changes

On December 11, 1993,[3] the F6 was rerouted to operate between the Silver Spring and New Carrollton Metro stations like its sister Metrobus route F4 had been doing since December 3, 1978.[4] The segment of F6's routing between the Silver Spring Metro Station & University of Maryland College Park Campus remained mostly the same, only with the exception that F6 would be rerouted to divert to serve both newly-opened West Hyattsville and Hyattsville Crossing Metro stations.[4][5] The major change in F6's routing; however, was the fact that F6 was rerouted to operate on a completely new route segment between the University of Maryland College Park Campus & New Carrollton Metro Station, by remaining straight on Campus Drive past the intersection of Baltimore Avenue (U.S. Route 1), where the street turns into Paint Branch Parkway, then using River Road to enter/serve the newly opened College Park - U of MD Metro Station, and then operating the rest of the way to the New Carrollton Metro Station, via River Road, Kenilworth Avenue (MD 201), Good Luck Road, Auburn Avenue, Riverdale Road, Finns Lane, Harkins Road, and Ellin Road.

The segment of F6's former routing between the University of Maryland College Park Campus & Greenbelt Center (Crescent Road & Gardenway) was taken over by the C2 Metrobus Route, which was extended from its previous terminus at Beltway Plaza to the Greenbelt Center (Crescent Road & Gardenway).[4] C2 was designed to operate on almost the exact same routing as F6 originally did between the University of Maryland College Park Campus & Greenbelt Center (Crescent Road & Gardenway), via the Beltway Plaza, only with the exception that C2 would divert onto Cherrywood Lane & Greenbelt Metro Drive, in between in order to serve the newly opened Greenbelt Metro Station, before returning back to Greenbelt Road/ entering the Beltway Plaza. At the same time, however; F6 completely took over the segment of C2's former routing between the University of Maryland College Park Campus as C2 was rerouted to no longer serve, nor operate by the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center.

2003 service changes

On May 15, 2003, the F6 no longer entered and looped inside the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center in order for WMATA's former Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center Metrobus terminal to be demolished to make room for a new Target store.[6]

2008 service changes

On September 28, 2008, F4 & F6's Metrobus Stop/Terminal was relocated from Bay N inside the original Silver Spring Metro Station Bus Bay, to the temporary Metrobus Stop/Terminal that WMATA placed on the curb located north of intersection of Wayne Avenue & Colesville Road, right across from the Silver Spring Metro station. The reason why this particular change took place was due to the fact that the original Silver Spring Metro Station Bus Bay, where all buses originally terminated, as well as the adjacent Kiss & Ride Lot, were both demolished in order to make room for the brand new Silver Spring Transit Center to be constructed.[7] Upon the center's delayed opening in 2015, the routes began stopping there.[8]

Rerouting to serve Fort Totten

Beginning June 17, 2012, F6 was rerouted to operate between the New Carrollton and Fort Totten Metro stations instead of between the New Carrollton and Silver Spring Metro stations. The portion of F6's former routing between the intersection of East–West Highway & Riggs Road & the Silver Spring Metro station was completely replaced by route F4.[9] Route R3 was cut back in the process, operating back and forth between the Prince George's Plaza & Greenbelt Metro stations on weekday peak hours only and was renamed the Greenbelt–Prince George's Plaza Line. The R3 was eventually discontinued on March 27, 2016.[10]
