Names that do not have a Wikipedia biography need reliable sources

[edit]

Time and again, someone adds a name to this list that is thereafter deleted because there is no Wikipedia biography article about the individual. To include an individual that does not have a biographical article, reliable sources must be cited that prove the person is a film and television director. Additionally, when the edit screen is opened the following hidden message appears: "Names that do not have a Wikipedia biography must include reliable sources per WP:VERIFY and WP:NOR." And the advisory posted above cannot be ignored: "This article must adhere to the biographies of living persons (BLP) policy". Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 06:45, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note to let you know that the hidden message most likely needs an update as it currently says that any new entry needs a reliable source: "This list is subject to the Biographies of living persons (lists) policy and the lists of people guideline. Please familiarize yourself with both before editing this list. In addition, note that a reliable source that justifies inclusion in this list must be provided for any new entry." "it currently says that any new entry needs a reliable source." No. That's not what the hidden message says. It specifically states (in each alphabetical section, from A–Z): "Names that do not have a Wikipedia biography must include reliable sources per WP:VERIFY and WP:NOR".
I've learned through the years that a brief hidden message stands a better chance of being read. But as with all hidden messages, many editors simply don't pay attention to them when they appear in the edit screen.
Sources are not necessary if an individual in the list has a Wikipedia biography article -- which should by its very existence comply with BLP (if the individual is alive). However, if there is no biographical article in Wikipedia for an individual added to the list the entry must include reliable sources. The {{Citation needed}} template is not used in this list; and since its creation in 2005, many names have been deleted for lacking RS. Pyxis Solitary (yak). My first reply should have been clearer by referencing the 'page notice' that appears more visibly and prominently at the top of the edit screen and has the message I included above: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Editnotices/Page/List_of_female_film_and_television_directors. Seems like the hidden message isn't given due attention because the page notice dominates the edit screen. Will be good to have the page notice updated to match the hidden message or for it to be removed from this article if possible. IndigoBeach (talk) 12:24, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nation of birth

[edit]

I think that the nation listed next to a name should only be the country where the individual was born. Where someone was raised is not a place of birth (example: Mexico-USA, which means born in Mexico & emigrated to the USA). The USA should not be included as a nationality unless the individual has become a citizen of the USA — or any other second country. Anyone else have a thought about this? Pyxis Solitary (yak). Dates

[edit]

This would be a lot more helpful if we added dates, such as dates of birth/death or dates of active career. Also, if made into a single table, so that way one could trace the history of women directors. Jmj713 (talk) 17:45, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You mean something like List of feminists? If you go down that route, you need to be prepared to provide reliable sources for nationality, date of birth, date of death, and career history (and IMDb cannot be used as a reliable source: Perennial sources#IMDb, WP:RS/IMDB, WP:CITINGIMDB). Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 21:19, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly, and since most of them have articles created, the dates are already referenced there. So it's just a matter of copying that information. I found this list when I was looking to discover women-directed films during the first half of the 20th century. I know if a couple, like Ida Lupino, but the list as is right now is not very useful. "the list as is right now is not very useful". There are worse lists. But I found this list to be impressive and informative, and it's why I decided to contribute to it. Scroll down to the Further reading and External links sections. If you can't find info about 20th century female directors in the sources and links provided ... you won't find it anywhere unless you conduct a LibSearch and Nexis Uni search. And some things have to be done old school: going in person to a film library such as the Academy Film Archive, Sherman Grinberg Film Library, USC's Cinematic Arts Library, UCLA Film and Television Archive, Cinémathèque québécoise, British Library, etc. I was in university before the Internet made academic research a little easier, and I spent hours at the Museum of Modern Art Library in NYC researching and compiling information about movie musicals. Right, I didn't mean it isn't useful, sorry. It's more that it's a chore to find the information I'm looking for. So far I've just been scrolling through the names and using the pop-up feature. Still, I think adding dates would be a worthwhile task but I understand it would be a lot of work, and not something I'm currently able to spend time on. Jmj713 (talk) 17:08, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
