Wikipedia Content translation tool

I am trying to use the Wikipedia:Content translation tool but it says it is limited to extended confirmed editors which are “editors who have been registered for at least 30 days and have made at least 500 edits to the English Wikipedia”. I believe my account meets that criteria as I have well over 500 edits and have had this account for at least 2 years, yet I’m still unable to use the tool. Can someone advise on this problem? I’d like to use it to translate an article for English Wikipedia.

Thank you! CMD007 (talk) 00:38, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CMD007, where do you have a problem? What happens when you click on ”Wikipedia:Content translation tool” and then on ”Go to Special:ContentTranslation”? TSventon (talk) 01:29, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply, when I follow those prompts I can select the foreign language article I want to translate, but after I press translate it just disappears. The caption “On the English Wikipedia machine translation is disabled for all users and this tool is limited to extended confirmed editors (see WP:CXT).” is on the page the entire time. I guess that makes sense if all users aren’t able to translate, but then why have the tool? CMD007 (talk) 01:40, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CMD007: I found this summary. RAN1 (talk) 02:02, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your time. CMD007 (talk) 07:56, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CMD007, when I select a Swedish article for translation and click “start translation“, I get a page with two columns, Swedish with the original article and English, which is blank. When hovering over the English column I see “+ Add translation“, which adds the Swedish text to the English column. I can then overtype the Swedish text with my own translation. What language are you trying to translate from and what do you get when you select a foreign-language article for translation? TSventon (talk) 08:19, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Hello, I’m trying to translate a Spanish article, Imperial Order of Saint Charles [es], an imperial order. I can select the article, but When I push Start Translation, it just disappears and nothing is there. CMD007 (talk) 08:35, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CMD007, I get the same two columns for that article as for the Swedish ones. You could try asking at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Content_translation if you don't get an answer here. TSventon (talk) 08:47, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ TSventon: Interesting, I must have to check my settings or something. Ok, thanks for the help! CMD007 (talk) 09:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@CMD007, in my experience most of the work in translating an article is not the translation of the text, but making sure the article is suitable for en Wikipedia, see Help:Your first article. For example your article on the Imperial Order of the Mexican Eagle has been tagged with “Some of this article's listed sources may not be reliable“ and “This article relies largely or entirely on a single source“. Also, it appears to be a translation of the es Wikipedia article and that should be mentioned in an edit summary, see Help:Translation. TSventon (talk) 09:18, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ TSventon: I did omit that it was a translation in the creation summary, it was an overlook. I have added more references/sources since that labeling and plan to add more soon. I believe it is as suitable as any other article on Italian, French, or German royal orders, but more work needs to be done as far as references. In fact, an article like Military Order of Savoy has zero sources/references that I can find. We’ll have to work on that, Thank you. CMD007 (talk) 09:27, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CMD007, I have added a credit for the es Wikipedia source as that can be done retrospectively. I also added some categories and a link to the es Wikipedia article in the Languages section via “Edit links“. I think that the tags added by the New Page Patroller meant that the article was generally suitable, but that more work needed to be done on the references. Wikipedia prefers journalistic and academic sources over sites which sell products, see WP:VENDOR. All the references so far are just urls, it is better to use citation templates or a manual equivalent, so important information like a book's title and author can be displayed, see Help:Referencing for beginners. Military Order of Savoy was created ten years ago, so it is possible that standards were different then. TSventon (talk) 11:26, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of family names

I wanted to know if this edit [1] by an editor was actually constructive? I can name millions of article that include FIRST NAMES of the family. Yet what they BLP policy mentions is to avoid using FULL NAMES in such cases. Should I re-add them back? Also since the article subject is already dead. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rejoy2003 (talkcontribs) 03:58, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

He is, but they're not. But yeah first names of children are published sometimes, sometimes not, there's no rule. But since the names were just added recently, and since an editor objected, WP:BRD is in play I think, so you should not restore them, but rather go to the talk page and hash it out. If it was me I'd let it go. It's not really a BLP violation to include the first names, but the spirit of BLP is to err on the side of privacy if possible, and there's little reason to include the names I don't think.Herostratus (talk) 04:33, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BLPNAME says The presumption in favor of privacy is strong in the case of family members of articles' subjects.... Names of family members who are not also notable public figures must be removed from an article if they are not properly sourced. So it seems to me that the children's names should not be included unless there are reliable sources for them, and probably not even then unless the children's names somehow helps the reader understand the subject of the article. I don't understand the distinction the OP is making between full names and first names, given that the family name is known. CodeTalker (talk) 05:15, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with CodeTalker. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:48, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We include children's names in some circumstances if they have been widely discussed in reliable sources. In this case, the cited source is Goan Voice UK, which bills itself as a newsletter, and seems to be a one man project run by Eddie Fernandes. He aggregates news published by other outlets that is of interest to people from Goa. If you look at that newsletter, I think that it is obvious that he is not doing independent fact checking. Therefore, the reliability of the original source is what matters and that source should be cited, not the news aggregator. The original source of this information is an obituary and it is a dead link. Obituaries written by professional journalists are reliable sources, while obituaries written by family members are not. At this time, we have no way of determining whether this obituary is reliable, and therefore, the names should be excluded, in my opinion. Cullen328 (talk) 18:23, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Some advice

Hi. Without naming any names, I'm concerned that I have come across a few editors who are tag-teaming on a bunch of articles and propagating a biased perspective which I think violates WP:NPOV. There's a general topic which I have some cause to believe is not very well represented on the English Wikipedia, for a whole set of social and cultural reasons which perhaps may be complicated for "outsiders" to understand. However, this is also in a very significant topic and in this case, what is on Wikipedia can also have outsized effects off-Wikipedia too. I've been on Wikipedia for more than a decade and I think I have a fair amount of awareness of Wikipedia policies, but I'm not an active editor and don't have much experience. Does someone have any advice? I'm happy to go into much more detail (including names) privately, but I'd rather not name anyone or anything publicly yet. Arceus775 (talk) 07:16, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arceus775. Have you tried discussing your concerns with these editors on the relevant article talk pages? That's probably the first thing you should try and do. If they respond positively, then perhaps together you can cleanup whatever NPOV issues you think need to be cleaned up. If they don't respond positively, you can work your way through WP:DR and try other things. You might also want to take a look at WP:RGW for reference because it's possible (based upon the for a whole set of social and cultural reasons which perhaps may be complicated for "outsiders" to understand part of your original post and the small number of edits you have made so far with this account) that there might be some things about Wikipedia that you don't quite understand. It's hard to say which is which without you providing more specifics; however, in general, content disputes are expected, for the most part, to be resolved through article talk page discussion, whereas behavioral issues sometimes end up needing administrator involvement to be resolved. In either case, there's really no way to avoid naming names and providing proof (either of the inappropriate behavior of others or in support of your position) in order to resolve such disagreements since the vast majority of Wikipedia-related issues need to be resolved on Wikipedia at some point for transparency purposes and to make it easier for other members of the Wikipedia community to participate. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:00, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, thanks for making the effort to not bite. I'm being cagey intentionally, but I'm quite certain discussing directly with the relevant editors on talk pages is not going to be productive. Anyway, if there's anyone out there who's willing to do a reasonably quick sanity check and let me know if they think it's worth it for me to pursue this, please reach out. I've just created u/burner20221106 on Reddit. Arceus775 (talk) 18:25, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arceus775, does this concern this thread? Quisqualis (talk) 21:23, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to report or block a disruptive editor

A disruptive editor is vandalizing a wiki page Joshkabab (talk) 08:16, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Joshkabab Vandalism, efforts to deface an article(preferred term instead of the broader "page"), may be reported to WP:AIV. 331dot (talk) 08:19, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to assume Assume good faith before you try to report them. A vandal is someone who purposely tries to deface an article. Club On a Sub 20 (talk) 15:53, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish skaters

You are missing Jason Brown. 75.63.50.14 (talk) 12:17, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide a link(s) to the article(s) concerned. Also, depending on the criteria involved, it may be a case where a list would only contain 'notable' persons; which would mean only those whom Wikipedia have an article about. Eagleash (talk) 12:23, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are missing where he is missing. Jason Brown (figure skater) is included in List of Jews in sports#Figure skating. I haven't found other relevant lists. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:53, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Create wikipedia Page

How can i create a wikipedia page for a media company . When i try to create i got always rejected even i show the government proof . JANAKKAFLE121 (talk) 14:53, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

JANAKKAFLE121 A government has no role in the presence of a Wikipedia article(the proper term, instead of "page"). Not every company merits a Wikipedia article. A company merits an article if it receives significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources showing how it meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable company. Press releases, interviews, brief mentions, announcements of routine business activities, and the like do not establish notability. 331dot (talk) 15:03, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Joining a WikiProject

Hi! I quite recently discovered a WikiProject of interest that I like; but I'm very badly stuck on how to join it and become a member, and start contributing. How do I become the member of the WikiProject? Wikipedian10282 (talk) 20:27, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedian10282 I don't know which project you refer to, but for most if not all of them, you just say you're a member. Some projects have member lists you can just add your name to. 331dot (talk) 20:32, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that narrows it down. I initially thought that there were some requirements on how to join, but I'd never imagined that it was this easy. I really appreciate your quick and informative response. Wikipedian10282 (talk) 20:39, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedian10282 The project pages I've looked at all have at least a section--some have a special tab--for members, or for joining. Under those sections or tabs, they generally give instructions for joining--typically by editing the section to add your user name to the list. And they'll typically provide a template for adding a UserBox to your User Page to say you're a member of the project. Of course, it's all optional. Sandbox

Hi! Is my sandbox (the one where I conduct tests on), visible or editable to other people? I want it to be completely private, since I do not want other people to see content that I personally test with. Is there a way to make it private? Wikipedian10282 (talk) 12:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikipedian10282 No there isn't, everything you can edit on WP can be seen by anyone who knows where to look. So there is absolutely stuff you shouldn't do as as tests/practise even in your sandbox, like copypasting copyrighted text into WP, WP:BLP-violations etc. For complete privacy, don't use WP. What do you mean by "Hypertext"? (Is it this? Or is it this?) Bazza (talk) 13:24, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I meant wikilinks - Wikilinks Wikipedian10282 (talk) 13:27, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They are used for the reason we've been (mostly) using them — to provide easy access to further information when the reader may not completely understand what has been written. Bazza (talk) 13:46, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It helps that it's very easy to make wikilinks, e.g. changing example to example where HTML would be <a href="/wiki/Example">example</a>. But we do have limits at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#What generally should not be linked. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:55, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Wikipedian10282 (talk) 15:06, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipedian10282: you can think of it as a core technical policy of Wikipedia, embedded in the "wiki" part of name, and they are a defining feature. When Wikipedia started in 2002, it was not as obvious as is in now that hypertext links were such a powerful tool. -Arch dude (talk) 15:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the duplication that the OP is talking about, in either Tamer of Tigers or ru:Укротительница тигров. Blaze Wolf, the longer word means a female tamer, the shorter a male tamer. The film is about a female tamer, so that is the word in the title of the ru article. I don't know know why the OP is talking about an article about a male tamer, unless perhaps they have used machine translation on the title of the English article. Creating a template

I have been working on updating lists of state ballot measures for a while now and am dead-set on fleshing out all 50 states. I am wondering what the process is to create a template - I have a basic template set up in my sandbox that I would like to eventually put on each article once I get more than 50% of them done. To do that would I just copy/paste the source into a page titled Template:Ballot measures footer or is there a different process to follow? ThadeusOfNazereth(he/him)Talk to Me! 16:53, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ThadeusOfNazereth: That's it. You might have used United States topic to reduce coding a lot but there is no need to convert it now. The name parameter must match the page name to make correct V T E links. You currently have name = Ballot measures in the United States which is a better name anyway so it would be Template:Ballot measures in the United States, but I suggest the shorter Template:US ballot measures. The parameter is not shown to readers. I see you have implemented a state parameter. You can document it and add some categories with:
<noinclude>

</noinclude>

<noinclude> starts right after }} on the same line. We prefer to avoid redirects in navigation templates because we want a bold selflink when the template is transcluded on the article itself. You currently have redirects for Alaska, Michigan, District of Columbia. I use User:BrandonXLF/GreenRedirects to make it easy to spot. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:16, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Desktop reading visualization

Wikipedia desktop version in English has a bad visualization, as the text compasses the whole screen, unlike other websites whre the text is more centralized in order to provide a better and a more pleasant reading. Why not in English? 177.133.140.98 (talk) 17:45, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Portuguese Wikipedia has chosen to use the Vector 2022 skin by default. English Wikipedia has not made that decision yet. Seems that opinions on whether Vector 2022 is better or not remain divided. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:00, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you create an account then you can choose Vector 2022 and many other things at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering, or Special:GlobalPreferences#mw-prefsection-rendering to apply to all Wikipedia languages and Wikimedia wikis. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:36, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see no obvious problems at Final Legacy or Final legacy, if there were some sort of "blocks" it should be seen at those redlinks. Did you try some other title-version? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:57, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't IP addresses disallowed from creating articles in mainspace? I believe the right is only reserved for any registered user that's autoconfirmed. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:47, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That could be it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:19, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IP addresses can't create directly into mainspace. It has been like that for a few years now. Depending on when you made it, you may have been able to do it previously, however, you did say that you created a draft before, so there's no change. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:35, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to create another new article today, MK5056, and the same behaviour occurred. Once again there was no offer to create it in draftspace. I checked the logs and there is no previous article under this name or any other reason I can see. @Lee Vilenski: I'm not sure I understand your last comment... perhaps this: I created a draft for a different article, Atari Word Processor. I did so by typing in that term to search, which took me to the "no article" page, which included a link to create it in draftspace using the wizard. In this case, and MK5056 this morning, when I did precisely the same thing, no offer to create it in draft appeared. I was simply not able to create it, period. I am trying to understand why this is happening, why I do not see the draftspace link in these cases but do in others. 108.168.93.43 (talk) 14:32, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I saw the link you are referring to on both items, you aren't editing on mobile per chance? This message doesn't appear on that type of browser for whatever reason.Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:36, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: Nope, not mobile, desktop. Playing about a bit, I used the same search bar for "articles for creation" and was taken to a page that did include the link to the draft wizard. So then I searched for "Final Legacy" just now and also got the link. The issue appears to be modal, but I can't see the pattern. 108.168.93.43 (talk) 14:43, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhh, if you SEARCH for the topic you get the wizard, if you CLICK on the topic (like in a redlink) you do not. That is rather bad UI. Where's the suggestions box? 108.168.93.43 (talk) 14:44, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia help

Can my firm hire someone to submit corrections on our page? If yes, are there reputable firms that provide this service? There seems to be many that say they can do the job but who know who they are. 2603:7000:9803:D19A:B568:7926:7F:1207 (talk) 20:56, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IP! You really shouldn't be attempting to do so as that would be considered paid editing. Most of the time if someone offers to edit an article for money it's a scam. If there are things you think should be corrected then submit an edit request on the relevant article's talk page and an editor will eventually come by and either implement the request, or decline it with a reasoning as to why. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:08, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You may, but I would advise against it. Some of the firms offering a service may be legitimate, professional, and competent: many of them are scammers, preying on people who have the mistaken impression that Wikipedia is a place to promote yourself. None of them are in any way authorized or supported by Wikipedia, but as long as they follow Wikipedia's policies, they are permitted to work and to offer their services for hire. Whether you hire somebody, or your employees do it, they must declare their status as "paid editors".
What I would recommend is
1. one or more of your employees create accoumts (all accounts must be individual, and their names must not suggest that they represent an organization. But "Jackie at XYZ.com" would be acceptable. Or they could just use their real names, or pseudonyms).
2. They read WP:PAID carefullu, and make the mandatory disclosures.
3. They use the Edit request mechanism to request changes to the article. They should be as precise in their requests as possible (eg "Add the following text after XXX" or "Replace the sentence XXXX by YYYY", and give references - independent if possible - for any information they wish to insert.
4. Recognize that the article does not belong to you, and Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.

@Doug butler: "Scott Hicks" -linksto:"Scott Hicks (director)" gives 46 results. That's low enough to manually examine whether it's the right Scott Hicks. Otherwise you can try to refine the search with additional terms like director or film. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:14, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable compositions

Two articles: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of compositions by Matthew de Lacey Davidson and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew de Lacey Davidson were recently closed as a result of delete. The linked compositions Quartetto dell'Arte, Symphony No. 1 in 20 keys ("Letter to the World"), and The Singing Lesson were created by the same editor. Since the composer and composition list are no longer deemed notable for inclusion; should each of these articles be put up for AfD? Each have been created by the same editor and any references are a clear COI due to primary sources. I cannot find notable performances or reviews. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 21:49, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the notability of the article needs to be considered, put it up at AfD. Make sure to individually review each article - one composition may be more notable than another. Sungodtemple (talk) 22:06, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Archived talk section breaks Update box

At the top of Atmospheric methane, there has been a "This article's factual accuracy may be compromised due to out-of-date information" box since February 2020. The link to the talk page leads nowhere, because the relevant discussion has been archived. Surely if the banner is still relevant then the discussion isn't ready to be moved to the archive. How are cases like this supposed to be handled? Renerpho (talk) 22:29, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Renerpho. Archiving of talk pages is usually done automatically on the basis of the age of the entry. It is easy enough to find the title of the section ("Preindustrial CH4 indicates greater anthropogenic fossil CH4 emissions") from the link, and then search the archives of the talk page. But in fact Talk:Atmospheric methane has only one archive, so it is easier to go straight to it, and find Talk:Atmospheric methane/Archive 1#Preindustrial CH4 indicates greater anthropogenic fossil CH4 emissions, where you will see that there was just one reply, on the same day as the original post, pointing out that the issue is mentioned in another article (Methane). Is there any way (via some template magic or...?) to omit long repetitive base URL fragments from links to specific page numbers of an internet archive book?

At the article golden ratio I added a bunch of specific page links to the internet archive scan of a book by Livio. The markup for these citation footnotes was previously and now looks like . Having the specific links to cited pages seems like a valuable service to readers (makes it much easier to follow citations to the source), but having to clutter up every link with the repetitive https://archive.org.../page/ part does a disservice to editors or source readers, and is annoying to write.

Has anyone ever thought of designing a template such that we could put a base part of a URL like this one time on the page, and then refer to it with some shortcut? Perhaps a fork of the sfn template could slurp that base URL from some (hidden) parameter of the referenced citation template, and then combine it with a parameter of the footnote template including the extra portion of the URL to append? –jacobolus (t) 22:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removing "link" designation from name entry

When I entered my name as a descendant of Rev. Ralph Wheelock, it saved as a "link." I want to know how to remove the link while retaining the name. Jonilight3 (talk) 23:29, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jonilight3, from your edits I think you are using the visual editor. Technically, to remove a link, click on it and press the button that has a link with a line through it.
From a policy point of view, your name should not be added to the list, nor should the list even exist, because it is irrelevant information. Listing distant descendants of a person is an unproductive task. For example, take Genghis Khan. He has millions of living and nonliving descendants, many of whom have Wikipedia articles. This sort of content falls under WP:NOTDATABASE. Sungodtemple (talk) 23:48, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Image

Hello,

Someone uploaded an image for Alex Prager without our consent here. How do we go about changing the image?

Thanks! Alex Prager Studio Bvpicts (talk) 00:29, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do you own the copyright to that photo? AndyTheGrump (talk) 00:36, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bvpicts: The file you removed (File:Alex Prager in 2022 02.jpg) actually seems OK for Wikipedia purposes since it appears to have been uploaded by the person who actually took the photo. Are you claiming that this photo wasn't taken by its uploader Cmichel67. On the other hand, the file you uploaded (File:BTS Alex Prager TabithaDenholm.jpeg) has some issues that need to be resolved in order for it to avoid deletion. Do you mean c:COM:CONSENT when you say that the first photo was uploaded without our consent? That's really the only "consent" that matters when it comes to photo copyright matters and Wikipedia (Wikimedia Commons), and it would only matter if you (or whomever is "our") actually owns the copyright on the photo; otherwise, your "consent" isn't really needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:02, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I uploaded BTS Alex Prager TabithaDenholm.jpeg because the artist does not want Cmichel67 image on her page. We own the rights to the BTS Alex Prager TabithaDenholm.jpeg as we took it. This image is ©ALEX PRAGER and Courtesy of Alex Prager. Please let me know how to add the information so that it is not deleted. Thanks! Bvpicts (talk) 01:16, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
While we may possibly take what Prager 'wants' into consideration, neither she, nor anyone representing her is required to 'consent' to Wikipedia using a properly-licensed photo of her. As for the new image, it is unclear under what license it has been released. You need to rectify that. AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:19, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
...regarding the above, the image has to be released to a suitable free license, which means that the image can be copied, edited, and reused by anyone, including for commercial use. are you willing to release your works as such? if not, the image will be reverted back to the previous one used and your image will be deleted, since we do not accept copyrighted material (even when wikipedia has a license to use it) unless it is free content. for more on this, please read Donating copyrighted material. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:31, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bvpicts: Please stop removing the speedy deletion template I've added to the file's page. I've posted a more detailed message on your user talk page explaining what needs to be done in order for the file to avoid deletion. If you continue to remove the template without addressing the relevant issue in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policy, then not only will the file end up deleted but your account will likely end up being WP:BLOCKed by an WP:ADMINISTRATOR for edit warring. If you read what I posted and have any questions, feel free to ask them on your user talk page and I will be happy to try and help you sort this out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:35, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you are in any way employed as part of Alex Prager Studio, then you are in breach of Wikipedia's terms of service by editing the article without making the mandatory declarations as a paid editor. I have tagged Alex Prager as having been edited for payment. In any case, please study carefully the policies on editing with a conflict of interest, and do not make any further direct edits to the article: use edit requests instead. Late Problems with Using Wikipedia

As of the last month, or so, I am continually being delayed in my private research when using Wikipedia. These delays include "Captha" error messages (often with no image to `verify') as well, when using Wikipedia links to latitude-longitude coordinates with ACME Maps, it does not allow me delete old `Marks', add new `Mark"; or view list of `Marks'. Why is this happening? Is it because I often work online or up to 16 hours at a time? My research is important to me and keeps my mind stable (since 1979). My research is listed as the `Northern Shipwrecks Database' under the name `Northern Maritime Research' (www.NorthernMaritimeResearch.com) How can these interruptions be stopped? 24.68.26.58 (talk) 06:54, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"private research" sounds like reading but if you refer to editing Wikipedia then you can avoid captchas by creating an account and becoming autoconfirmed. Interesting idea! The information and tools to do this are all available in Wikidata, but turning it all into a simple one-click interface would be a challenge. Wikidata is a database with structured information about many things, specifically including Wikipedia articles. To use it effectively, you need to learn some basic stuff about relational databases, and some simple stuff about its query language. I'm not sure it has a "random" function, so you might want to just create a big list of suitable articles, then randomize the big list and break it into 365 daily lists, once a year. -Arch dude (talk) 15:09, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not all drafts need to go through Articles for Creation although those written by IP editors and new accounts do. Sandy Roberton

This article has recently been massively expanded by another editor (creating a whole raft of issues in itself), but my question relates to the inordinate amount of whitespace that now appears, between the text and the References section, which seems to be a failure relating to the "Footnotes" template somewhere along the line. Can someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. not me) try to sort this out? Thanks. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:03, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to find what REALLY links to an article, and when 'What links here' gave me far too many, I realized that the TRANSclude feature of wiki may be getting in the way.

Trying "Hide transclusions" didn't seem to help, but in my looing around I found '[3]' but I don't think I know how to make it operate, or at least the pink-colored "Code that you insert" atop the .JS made me think it's time to admit I need to ask at HELP DESK. Can you point me to something already documented/semi-cookbook style (This help question is long enough; I don't want to have someone write something just for my benefit, at least unless it can be repackaged for future use). Nuts240 (talk) 16:05, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nuts240: The pink box at Special:MyPage/common.js is a standard warning. Most editors probably ignore it and add any useful sounding script from random users. If it makes you more comfortable running my code, I'm an administrator here and User:PrimeHunter/Source links.js can only be edited by myself and interface administrators. I don't promise my JavaScript is always correct but it's not malicious. Just create Special:MyPage/common.js with this code:

In this particular case, a WP:ABOUTSELF source like your Facebook (it has the blue checkmark) would work, so if you add something like "Retired from mma in 2018" at say [5], that should be usable. As noted above, the difference is that if you click on a redlink you will not get the offer for the wizard, if you search for it you do. 108.168.93.43 (talk) 14:45, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation why my topic was not accepted

I have edited some topics and tried to propose a page. The page was denied and I don't know why. The person who denied it is no longer available to explain why it was denied or what else I can do to establish a page.

Is ther anyone that can help? Thank you, Laura LGOWA (talk) 14:20, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What topic was it, and where did you propose it? On articles for creation or something similar? 108.168.93.43 (talk) 14:39, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I believe they're talking about their now-deleted sandbox page. @LGOWA, Wikipedia is not a place for chronicling processes - it is not meant to be a "How to" guide, but a collection of encyclopedia articles which summarize what reliable sources have said about notable subjects. I can't see the content of the deleted page, but it sounds like this may've been the issue. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:49, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is, possibly, a copy of the deleted material at User talk:LGOWA/sandbox. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:51, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. A summary of what reliable sources have said about "integrated tactical planning" might be viable as an encyclopaedia article. An account of your experience, however valuable it might be, is not appropriate for Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 14:55, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inserting thumbnail in infobox

Hi..trying to insert a thumbnail photo in an infobox and in preview it displays: File:BarryforWikipedia.jpg in red rather than the image. The article is "Colleen Barry" What am I doing wrong? Thank you. Brooksjim (talk) 15:43, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Brooksjim, the file is File:Barry for Wikipedia.jpg. The spaces are important. Please remember to declare any COI you may have with this subject. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:53, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Brooksjim, you have restored promotional wording which I removed from the article, and you have not declared what seems to be an evident COI. I have left a warning on your talk page and started a discussion on the article's talk page. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:31, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

recapture not working

Why isn't the recapture code working so I can publish some edits? I type it in exactly as it looks, but it makes no difference!
