Rafael Vergara Navarro (born name, 13 January 1949-2022)[1] was a renowned Colombian lawyer,[2] and environmentalist.[3]

Vergara was born in Cartagena, Colombia.[4] He studied Law at Universidad Externado de Colombia,[5] graduating in 1972,[6] and later would work at Superintendencia Bancaria,[7] until 1978.[8]

Vergara had grown at some point revolutionary beliefs which led him to found the international branch of the M19.[9][10] He obtained Asylum in México in 1979,[11] where he resided for 12 years.

During his career as a lawyer, Vergara persistently worked in cases defending mangroves,[12] and opposing the invasion of vacant State lots.[13]

Vergara was the son of local politician Rafael Vergara Támara.[14] He had four children.[15] Vergara had an inclination towards journalism.[16]
