Founded in Upstate New York in 1978 by Maureen Brady and Judith McDaniel, Spinster's Ink Books is one of the oldest Feminist publishers in the world. The press moved to San Francisco in 1982 under,headed by Sherry Thomas, and moved to Minnesota, where it was maintained by author and activist Joan Drury. In 2001 Spinster's Ink moved to Denver, under Sharon Silvas, who brought back into print The Wanderground by Sally Miller Gearhart. The company currently publishes out of midway, Florida, and employs Katherine V. Forrest as editorial supervisor.

Spinster's Ink has published numerous well known feminist authors, including Sheila Ortiz-Taylor, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Paula Gunn Allen, Elana Dykewomon, Judy Grahn, Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldua and Cherie Moraga
