The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a 2007 film directed by Julian Schnabel. It is based on the French memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

The film describes Bauby's life after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 43, which left him with a condition known as locked-in syndrome. The condition paralyzed him; his only remaining means of communication was the blinking of his left eyelid. The film premiered in competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 22.

Production

Schnabel resisted pressure by the production company to make it in English, believing that the rich language of the book wouldn't work as well in English, going so far as to learn French to do the film.[1]

Actor Johnny Depp had originally been set to play the lead character, Jean-Dominique Bauby, but he dropped from the project due to scheduling conflicts with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[1]

Plot

The film often shows what Bauby sees. For example, blinking is shown as the image becoming black momentarily. Much of the movie offers mind's-eye views of Bauby's memories and imagination.

Critical reception

The film received very favorable reviews from critics. As of January 12, 2008, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 94% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 102 reviews.[2] Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 92 out of 100, based on 31 reviews.[3]

The film appeared on many critics' top ten lists of the best films of 2007.[4]
