SM City North EDSA is a large shopping mall in the Philippines. It is the first and flagship SM Supermall owned and developed by Henry Sy and his company SM Prime Holdings, the largest retail & mall operator in the country. SM North is currently the 2nd largest shopping mall ever built in the Philippines in terms of Gross Floor Area (GFA). It is located at the intersection of North Avenue and Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Quezon City, approximately a kilometre west of Quezon City Hall and 10 kilometres north of Makati City. Since its construction in 1983 and opening in 1985, SM North has gone several major expansions and renovations in the 1990s, and features a bowling alley (under renovation), food court, garden, entertainment center and 12-theatre cinema amongst the SM Hypermarket and its 820 specialty shops and restaurants. In 2006, Ayala created significant market competitions as they constructed a shopping mall located at the EDSA North Triangle called TriNoma. The street between Trinoma and SM City North EDSA is very short, safe and crossable. The mall is currently ongoing redevelopment for expansion of the building. The relaunch of the new SM North EDSA will open at the first quarter of 2009.

History

The mall was constructed in November 1985, the first mall ever built by SM. The mall was then composed of just the main building and outdoor parking areas. The carpark building was built soon after, with the lower ground floor of the building quickly converted into more enclosed mall space. The two-floor annex was built after, expanding the mall's floor area and providing space for a bowling alley and four more movie theaters then SM demolished the building for a major renovation of the annexes. In July 2006, Annex 3 now better known as The Block was opened featuring the Hypermarket, Toy Kingdom, additional four movie theaters and several shops and restaurants. According to studies of large malls in the world by Eastern Connecticut State University, SM City North EDSA was ranked the 6th largest mall in the world in terms of Total GLA (Ground Level Area) of 331,861 m² and was ranked second largest in the country.

Buildings

The buildings are interconnected by a footbridge. They're also planning a footbridge interconnecting its near mall, TriNoma.

Main Building

The largest building of the mall. The Main Building features more than 500 shops and restaurants to enjoy. The main building features the eight SM Cinemas, Foodcourt, Department Store and Supermarket. The main building is also undergoing renovation with new renovating shops and restaurants being designed by Arquitectonica Interiors, the interior management firm that designed The Podium, SM Mall Of Asia and the new and ongoing renovation of SM Megamall.

Annex Building

The annexes are the additional buildings built on 1990's. The building features additional 200 shops and restaurants and the bowling alley. SM Appliance Center, Hardware Workshop and World of Fun are also located on the annex building.

On the last quarter of 2006, SM Prime Holdings demolished the building, for a major facelift. The demolition of the building is the first step of SM Prime Holdings for a competition with another mall in front of SM North EDSA, TriNoma. The new annex will feature the Sky Garden and surprise anchors. SM Prime Holdings is eyeing the first or second quarter of 2009 for the opening of the new annexes. The annexes' main designer is Arquitectonica, the architectural management firm that designed The Podium, SM Mall Of Asia and the new and ongoing renovation of SM Megamall.
