Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788-1827) was a French physicist who contributed significantly to the establishment of the wave theory of light. Fresnel studied the behaviour of light both theoretically and experimentally. An important technological innovation was the development of compound lens systems, rather than mirrors, for use in lighthouses.
