Letters of last resort
Letters of last resort refers to four hand-written letters by the UK Prime Minister that contain orders to the commanders of four British nuclear armed submarines what to do in the case that an enemy nuclear strike has destroyed the UK and killed the Prime Minister.
The letters are stored in each submarine and are destroyed when a new Prime Minister is appointed.
