History

Northwest High School was founded in 1955 and was originally located at where the Northwest Valley currently is (House Springs, Missouri, United States). The original buildings (there are multiple buildings on the old campus) of NHS was supposed to be a prison, however they made it a high school instead.

Athletics

Cross Country The Northwest Cross Country program has been historically strong since its inception in 1968. The entire team has qualified for state 23 times (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 2000). The team has won five state trophies, two individual titles (Josh Prasuhn 1972 and Don Shell 1975), and had 16 state medalists, but never a team championship in the state of Missouri.

Stan Nelson was the original coach of the boys cross country team and was instrumental in starting the girls program. He coached the team for 35 years and upon his retirement in 1999 the school's cross country invitational was renamed "The Stan Nelson Invitational." In 2002 Nelson was inducted in the Missouri Track and Cross Coaches Association (MTCCCA) Hall of Fame. One of Nelson's former runners, Ken Campbell, has been the head coach of the program since Nelson's retirement. Nelson's son, Mike, a state medal winner for Northwest, is currently the Cross Country coach at Marquette University.

Track and Field The Northwest track and field athletes have earned 62 medals at the state meet since the program began in 1955. Northwest state champions are: Gene Frohse, High Jump 1961; Mike Werner, 2-Mile Run 1974; Dave Aubry, 880-Yard Run 1976; Kevin Hitt, 2-Mile Run 1977, Dan White, 880-Yard Run 1979; Doug Hunsicker, Shane Varhol, Shawn Schwab, Clint Griffith, 2-Mile Relay 1988; Ron McGowne, High Jump 1993.

Northwest has also had a good history with Wrestling, winning the state title in 1984, as well as softball, with another state title in 1986. The Lions cheerleading squad added a third state title for the school in late 2007 and first in state early 2008.
