Shangdang (上黨), or the 'Seventeen Districts of Shangdang' was a territory in China during the Warring States Period which was briefly important about 265-260 BC. It lay mostly on the plain east of the Shanxi plateau. To the north was the State of Zhao and to the south, the the State of Wei, but it belonged to the State of Han. Han was south of Wei along the east-west part of the Yellow River. In 265 the ruler of Qin wanted to attack Han and threaten Wei and Zhao. He therefore moved northeast to cut off Shangdang. The Han ruler wanted to cede Shandang, but the local governor refused and offered it to Zhao. Zhao's acceptance led to the Battle of Changping which broke the power of Zhao and left Qin the major power in China.
