Central Bedfordshire University Technical College is a new university technical college (UTC) that is due to open in September 2012 in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, England. The University of Bedfordshire and Central Bedfordshire College are the lead academic sponsors of the UTC, and BE Aerospace and RWDI are the lead business sponsors of the UTC.[1]

Central Bedfordshire UTC is due to open in September 2012 at the Kingsland campus of Central Bedfordshire College in Houghton Regis. Parts of the campus have been vacated and extensively refurbished to accomodate the new UTC. However, in May 2012 some students from Central Bedfordshire College staged a protest after their studies were moved to the Dunstable campus of the college to make way for the UTC. The students complained that the move had left them with no designated rooms to continue their studies on the Dunstable campus.[2]

The UTC will have an initial intake of students aged 14 and 16 (academic years 10 and 12) in 2012, but will expand to accommodate students aged 14 to 19 over the following two years. The primary catchment area of the UTC is Central Bedfordshire and Luton, though students from other areas can attend if spare places are available.[3]

The UTC will specialise in product design, engineering and manufacturing.[4] Pupils aged 14 to 16 will study GCSEs along with a vocational qualification which will include practical learning, work related actions and opportunities for enterprise. These elements will form the Central Bedfordshire UTCs Technology Baccalaureate. Sixth form students will have the option to study courses which can lead to higher education, or apprenticeships which can lead to skilled work placements.[5]
