Wikipedia:Meetup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Michael Rawdon (talk | contribs) at 20:49, 26 August 2004 (→‎Silicon Valley Meetup). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Jimbo suggested that wikipedians make an effort to meet each other. He and Larry Sanger used to have bitter Usenet exchanges and when they met in person they became friends; so maybe a wikipedia meetup would help the sense of community.

This page should help Wikipedians organise meetings. For meetings in other languages/places please go to the other languages of this Article (see above/below).

How to organise a meeting

There are two ways:

  • Just put a date/place on this page, advertise on the village pump, contact Wikipedians by location, and you can set up meetings whenever and wherever you please! The German Wikipedians use this Wikipedia-system and it works really well. Meetings just show up on your watchlist :-)
  • You could use an external tool (e.g. Wikipedia @ Meetup.com), but you have to create an extra account, the tool takes decisions instead of you, no Watchlist... if you are serious about Wikipedia just use Wikipedia.

Regular meetings

Currently there are in the following places meetings happening regularely:

  • Berlin, Munich (see German Wikipedia)

European Wikipedia meetups 2004

Provisional dates:

  • 30. May - Some Dutch Wikipedians met in Utrecht (See nl:Wikipedia:Ontmoeten/Plaatsgevonden)
  • 5. June - London (See User:Jimbo Wales/2004-06-05)
  • 8. June - Frankfurt, and would like to meet for dinner
  • 10.-12. June - Berlin (Jimbo will be present)
  • 19. June - Munich (Jimbo will be present)
  • 26. or 27. June - Genoa (Jimbo will be present)
  • 4 July - Paris
  • 6. - 10. of July, there is World Meeting on Free Software in Bordeaux. cf. http://lsm2004.abul.org/ several of the French Wikipedians will be there. (Jimbo was unfortunately unable to make his schedule work for this)
  • 14. August - somewhere in Belgium (see nl:Wikipedia:Ontmoeten)
  • 21. August - Rotterdam or The Hague (see nl:Wikipedia:Ontmoeten)
  • any other proposals/ideas?
  • ? August - Amsterdamn
  • 31 August - London.
  • ? September - Linz

London, August 2004

Jimbo and I will be giving a talk about Wikipedia at Oyster, 1 Naoroji Street, London WC1X 0JD on August 31. It will start at 19:10 (BST). Updates on the event will be made at minty.org, a wiki run by the BBC employee who is organising this. (map) Angela. 00:41, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia Meetup, in Las Vegas???

from the pump

Hey, why dont we have a Wikipedia 'meetup' in my hometown, Las Vegas! Please, respond on my talk page for further details! Comrade Nick

Have you seen http://wikipedia.meetup.com/ ? Marnanel 19:35, Apr 17, 2004 (UTC)
Or, just use wikipedia itself, and organise things via Wikipedia:Meetup, which makes more sense if you ask me. - IMSoP 12:40, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Why think "either/or"? Take advantage of the free publicity of Meetup, and cross-reference your local Meetup to this page. My profile on the Sacramento Meetup is an example. (Just type the URL for Wikipedia:Meetup into your profile -- it will be replaced by the word "link" which is linked here.) Jrv 14:27, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Proposed Meetup in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area

June 2004, time and location to be determined. Add your name here if interested

Tampa, Florida Wikimeet

Also placed on User:Jimbo Wales I'm moving down to Tampa and I would like to meet everyone in the Florida/Southeast area, or whoever else would like to come. I've talked with Jimbo a little bit on this, so does anyone want to do something in Tampa on September 6? That's Labor Day. If that date isn't good, please suggest another one. And what do we want to do? Where to do it? Suggestions! Mike H 16:14, Jul 25, 2004 (UTC)

I found these three places for suggestions on the Meetup site. I'm not 21 yet so I don't know if it'd be such a great idea to go to "that alcohol place." Can someone suggest anywhere else? I mean, even a restaurant like Outback or something. Mike H 14:55, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
  • Tampa Bay Brewing Company

Hmm. I live in Palm Beach County.--Neutrality 21:18, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I'm new to Wikipedia. I love the concept. I'm in Sarasota and prefer smokefree places, outdoors, even, during the day. How about Siesta Key Beach? User:sketchgrrl

I don't know where that is. A user on User:Jimbo Wales suggested doing something at USF. I don't know much about Tampa so that might be the best bet for me. Tell me what you think. Mike H 17:24, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)

Second Boston Meetup

Well, that was fun. But a decent number of Wikimedians in the area couldn't make it. Let's have anohter meetup sometime this month... perhaps in NYC during the RNC, for balance? +sj+ 06:26, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

recently missed - #Ieshan, dchen, jt, sgj, mihai?, St.P.
I would be up for a second meet-up. New York would be most convenient. Danny 00:57, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Mountain View, CA
http://www.mountainviewca.net/restaurants/danastreet.html

  • Nohat 02:42, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC) - considering I work about 2 blocks from there, I can't really say no.
  • HobTalk 04:42, 2004 Aug 16 (UTC) - I'm not so nearby, but might be able to make it. Hope so.
  • 64.166.84.78 14:33, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC) - Sure, I can drop by. How do wikipedians identify each other in a crowd?
  • Peter Hendrickson 16:17, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC) - I'll bring a sign, but it's a small place anyway.
  • RayKiddy 02:51, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC) - I'll be there also.
  • mhr 20:49, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) - Sadly, I couldn't make it, tho that's an easy location for me to get to. Maybe next time...

Organisational issues

  • I propose to make this "meet the Wikipedians in Europe" a big headline on our Main pages in the different languages. It would be a shame if people who would like to get to know other Wikipedians would simply "not know" that there are meetings about to be held. Fantasy 12:23, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Or even Wikipedians in places outside of Europe. Sj

How about just"meet Wikipedians in Europe"? who needs the?Sunja
