Crystal Defenders is a series of turn-based strategy video games developed and published by Square Enix. The series uses the setting of Ivalice and design elements from Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, forming part of the wider Final Fantasy franchise. Series gameplay sees a selection of characters sporting Final Fantasy-based character classes play out tower defence scenarios against recurring series monsters.

Crystal Defenders was the first game developed for modern mobile devices, while Vanguard Storm was the first to be developed with touchscreen controls in mind. The character designs were created by Tactics A2 artist Ryoma Itō, regular composer Hitoshi Sakimoto contributed to the series music, while the game was directed by Takehiro Ando. The series has met with generally mixed reviews, while Crystal Defenders achieved one million downloads worldwide by 2012. Ando would go on to work on the successful Chaos Rings mobile series.

Titles

  • Crystal Guardians[b] is the first entry in the series, releasing in three parts between January and May 2008.[1][2][3] The game was first released for FOMA models, then for EZweb and SoftBank-compatible models.[4] Like most other mobile properties developed by Square Enix at the time, Crystal Guardians remained exclusive to Japan.[5]
  • Crystal Defenders[c] was the first Square Enix game developed for iOS mobile platforms.[5] The game was released worldwide for iOS in December 2008;[6] the game later released for Android in early 2011;[7] between 2009 and 2010, Crystal Defenders was released through Xbox Live Arcade,[8] PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable,[9][10] and for WiiWare.[11][12] A version dubbed Crystal Defenders Plus[d] released on February 20, 2013.[13] Distribution of Crystal Defenders Plus and Crystal Defenders's iOS version ended in May 2016.[14][15]
  • Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm[e], a sequel to Crystal Defenders, released released worldwide for iOS on May 13, 2009.[16] Distribution of Vanguard Storm ended in August 2017.[17]

Gameplay

Crystal Defenders stages consist a top-down view of a maze showing the path that monsters will be traveling. Stages are played in 31 waves (or levels) of enemies that enter the maze and walk along the pathway towards the goal. The goal of the game is to protect the crystals from enemies by strategically placing troops of various jobs alongside the pathway to defeat the enemies and preventing them to leave the map. If the enemies manage to escape with 20 crystals, the game is over.[18] Players can also summon Espers at the cost of some crystals to either cause damage to all enemies on screen or give status ailments to all characters. The game was originally known as Crystal Guardians and released into three separate chapters W1, W2, and W3. W1 chapter starts off with the Soldier, Time Mage, Archer, Thieves, Black Mage, and White Monk jobs.[19] W2 introduces the Berserker and Dragoon jobs and adds "crystal power" element to increase the power and speed of the player's characters.[20] W3 introduces the Fencer, Flintlock, and Tinker jobs however removes the Soldier and Archer jobs previously introduced in W1.[3]

The Wii version is divided into R1 and R2 chapters and offers a new ranking system via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, however R1 chapter offers less characters than the initial Crystal Defenders in order to be easier for first time players to learn the mechanics.[21] R1 contains the same jobs introduced in Crystal Guardians W1 including the dragoon job introduced in W2. R2 contains the same jobs in Crystal Guardians W3 and offers crystals feature previously introduced in Crystal Guardians W2.[22][23]

In Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm the map is split into left and right side, each side in a 4x4 grid. The player must defend their position on the right side from monsters that are invading from the left.[16] Vanguard Storm uses a rock-paper-scissors element. Soldiers can attack ground troops, but cannot hit flying ones and are not effective against pudding enemies. The Archers can attack Ahriman enemies and Black Mages can hit pudding enemies. Players can restore health with White Mages, boost attack with Bishop, and Paladins that shield a line from advancing enemies.[24]

Development

Three developers have worked on the Crystal Defenders series; the series as a whole was supervised by Final Fantasy franchise owner Square Enix. External studios Mobile Software Foundation and Winds worked with Square Enix on Crystal Guardians and Crystal Defenders, while Square Enix worked alone on Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm.[25][26][27][28] The Crystal Defenders series uses the recurring setting of Ivalice, specifically recycling character designs and aesthetic elements from the Nintendo DS title Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift.[1][29] Despite the differing genre from previous Tactics titles, the team aimed to keep the game as faithful as possible to the world and aesthetic of Ivalice.[29] The series reuses tracks from Tactics A2 composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and other composers from Sakimoto's studio Basiscape.[30][31] The character designs were created by Ryoma Itō, who had previously worked on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Tactics A2 and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.[32] The series was produced by Takehiro Ando of Square Enix's mobile division. Following the release of Crystal Defenders, Ando would go on to work on the successful Chaos Rings series.[33] Vanguard Storm was the first Square Enix game to be designed especially for touchscreen controls.[16]
